2012 Taxes will be due by the end of January. Please be sure to pay them on time to avoid any penalties.Â
If you purchased a home in 2011, make sure you visit your town assesors office by March 1, 2012 to apply for your STAR exemption.
If you are 65 years of age or older, or turning 65 by December 31st, you may qualify for an Enhanced STAR exemption. You need to renew your application for this every year so don't miss out! To apply, you must bring proof of your age and a copy of your 2010 Federal tax return to your town assesors office by March 1, 2012.Â
If you think you are paying more than you should be on your property taxes, call me at (518)591-4629. Each town has a tax grievance day where you can fight the amount you are paying if you believe it to be unfair. I am more than happy to research what others in your area are paying and provide you with the information you need to grieve your taxes. Should you decide to sell your home in the future, this is something that buyers will be looking at. If your taxes are higher than all of you neighbors, a buyer is likely to avoid your home due to the added cost. Save yourself some money now and make sure your home is competitive when it is time to sell.
Happy Holidays everyone!
