NEPA Wandrings: Lovin' NortheastPA

Pike & Wayne County: Wallenpaupack, Lake Ariel, Lackawaxen & Beyond

By Karen E. Rice | Agent in Lake Ariel, PA

Tink Wig Welcomes You Home

Pike County is a woodsy part of Northeastern Pennsylvania.  Visitors will see winding roads curving through beautiful forests, punctuated by beautiful rocks and boulders, wildflowers, and the ever present wildlife.  Autumn is especially beautiful in Pike County; the variety of deciduous trees in the area makes it a saturated and colorful work of art from late September through October.
Tink Wig Lake
A pleasant homeowner community, (or development) in Pike County is Tink Wig Mountain Lake Estates, located 5 miles east of Hawley.  Part of the Wallenpaupack School District, this Lacawaxen Township community is affordable and offers homeowners privacy, thanks to the larger lots.

Most of the lots in Tink Wig are at least an acre in size. This is perfect for those who want to have a little breathing room between neighbor's homes!

Because there is not an excess of amenities, it is one of the best deals going for homeowners on a budget; dues are low compared to other lake communities with pools.

Association dues are currently less than $500 per year (as of 2014; subject to change).  For that small amount, homeowners have a community pool, a clubhouse complete with snack bar and some games, a basketball court, a small children's playground, trash removal, and a fishing lake that is just the right size for paddling a canoe or kayak, or taking a ride in a rowboat.  The lake is non-motorboat; no gas-powered motors allowed.

Though I have lived here all my life, and spent many days as a young child riding my bike and quad around the area, I never did learn the reason this place is called "Tink Wig."

Years ago, there used to be a bar and grille nearby known as the Tink Wig Casino (which, interestingly enough, didn't any gaming tables or slot machines that I know of, though I was a young 'un at the time...and it burned down while I was in elementary school.) Supposedly the homeowner association took its name from the casino...but...why? Things that make you go hmmmm.

Here is a link to the Tink Wig Association Website - which provides some good info and a little history - but no real, satisfying answer as to where the mysterious and unique name originally came from.

Looks very nice, I like that there are no gas powered motor boats. How far from Manhattan, NY?
