Brief History of Malibu

Think of Malibu and we instantly think celebrities and beautiful homes. However, the true meaning of the Native American word "Malibu" is "the surf souns loudly". It was inhabited by the Chumash tribe for over 4,000 years.

Most of the land in Malibu was originally privately owned by Frederick Rindge and Rhoda May Rindge. Eventually they were forced to subdivide their land and construction of the Pacific Coast Highway began in 1929.

The first area inhabited in Malibu was the still-famous-today Malibu Colony. Malibu Colony is infested with celebrities.

For a long time, Malibu was an unincorporated area of Los Angeles. It only became a city as recently as 1991.
