Dear Heart . . .
So there's this hugely popular expression these days that goes like this, "Follow your heart!"Â And while I totally understand where this idea is coming from, I can't help but think if you look a little, this is not a great idea.Â
Now, before you pull out the tar and feathers and call me a negative Nancy, let me explain. Following your dreams, ideals, or deepest convictions are all great things and I'm totally for people doing all those thing. I'm the guy that's always pushing people around me to dig deeper, climb higher, and push harder than ever before. So that is not what I mean when I say it's not always a good idea to follow your heart.
The thing about the heart is that it tends to be selfish. It tends to think more about its needs and wants than the greater good. It tends to trigger emotions that can often be harmful and cause people to do and say things that they'll later regret. It's been said that the heart is deceitful above all things and that no one can understand it. And while the heart is capable of great acts of love and kindness, it is also capable of atrocity.Â
So what's the point of this rant? You can listen to your heart, but you need to keep it in check. If you follow it mindlessly, you might not like where you end up. So be careful, and always keep the needs of others in focus.
You're in the wrong place
Looking out for yourself
No matter what I say.
But I know that you're holdin' me back
And it's time for a change
So I'm giving you away!
Heart, you've let me down
Chasing love where it can't be found
And heart, we've fallen out
Cause all of your emotions have led me to doubt
Tell me, who's gonna save us now?"
