Today is National Dump the Pump Day, encouraging people to ride public transportation and save money instead of driving a car.
The Regional Transportation Authority, Chicago Transit Authority, Metra and Pace are joining other public transportation systems nationwide for the fifth annual recognition of Dump the Pump Day.
According to the American Public Transportation Association, public transportation in the U.S. saves the equivalent of 900,000 automobile fill-ups every day. The RTA system saves about 150 million gallons of gas annually.
“When a rider takes public transportation and leaves their car at home, they are contributing to the reduction of pollutants in the air, reducing highway congestion, saving money and showing their commitment to the sustainability of our environment,†RTA Executive Director Steve Schlickman said.
Participants who make the Dump the Pump pledge can register to win prizes, such as sporting event tickets and transit passes, at www.drivelesslivemore.com.
