Interior Design Tip: The Importance of Lighting

The Importance of lighting in your home

The types and use of light in interior spaces greatly affects the environment and “mood” inside the space.

Here are some examples of different types of light:

1. Natural Light

The importance of natural light in your home cannot be underestimated. Natural sunlight gives a home a sense of warmth and coziness that cannot be replicated. The affect sunlight has on your mood is incredible. Whilst you may not notice the positive effects natural sunlight in your home has on your mood, I can almost guarantee you will notice the negative effects a lack of sunlight will have on you. Whether a morning person or a night person, look for a home with ample sunlight, just decide when you would most prefer the light. For morning sun look for easterly facing homes, for afternoon sunlight you want a westerly facing property and for those who love sunlight you want either a south facing home or a home with dual exposure east and west.

2. Artificial Lighting

The lighting you choose to put in your home is also extremely important. Not only because you don’t simply go to bed when the sun goes down but because lighting also helps set a mood, create an atmosphere and last but not least, helps complete a room on an interior design front.

My key rules for artificial lighting:

1. ALWAYS, always, always, when possible get your lighting on a dimmer switch. From large floor lamps, to recessed lighting, the ability to dim your lights enables you to create a ‘mood’ or special ‘ambiance’ at the simple turn of a dial.

2. Recessed lights are worth it. People, track lights are not “basically the same as recessed lights”, they’re cheaper but they look cheaper. Recessed lights, when installed properly, add value to a property.

3. You need AT LEAST one chandelier in your home. Chandeliers inject personality and life into your home. For example my cozy one bedroom condo features 7 chandeliers. In fact, the only room without one is the living room, which has recessed lighting and this is because my living room is quite large with no designated center. Drop lighting is especially important in open plan spaces. Open plan spaces are notoriously hard to furnish as one struggles to create defined spaces, and by using chandeliers one can create ‘centers’ to their spaces. For example, by installing a chandelier above your dining table, it automatically grounds the table and gives it a defined area.
