Choosing the right counter top is a hard decision, and requires a lot of research. I spent many hours online and had many discussions with friends until i finally made up my mind and went with soapstone, and i think it was one of the best decision. here is why:
1. It is antibacterial by nature: No need to spray it with anti-bacterial products
2. Very easy to maintain: You wipe it, done! Unlike granite that needs to be cleaned with a cleaning product, soapstone feels clean without any special care
3. It changes color: Really, it does! Check out the photos
The light grey is the color of a natural soapstone. The dark grey (or black) is the color of the soapstone after you put some mineral oil on it. The oil creates a chemical reaction that turns the stone black. The coolest thing, is that the oil evaporates over time, so you can try out different colors and see what looks the best with your cabinets. If you want something very dark you have to put oil on it more frequently (once, twice per month at the beginning and less frequently later on). If you want a light color, you don't have to do anything. Pretty cool ha?
4. It is extremely durable: It doesn't scratch easily and is extremely tolerant to high heat. They even make fireplaces out of soapstone (who knew!)
5. The service is phenomenal: I am based in SF, and I ordered mine from soapstone.com. Everyone who works there is extremely polite and they offer great advice. They even managed to accommodate us earlier than initially thought and the installation was impeccable.
Some of you already know that I ‘ve been remodeling my kitchen for the last few months; so obviously at some point I had to choose between: buy a ‘normal fridge’ or buy a ‘sub-zero’? Sub zero is a awesome….but….it costs as much as a car…and in my case, more than mine! So my dilemma shifted to, buy a sub zero or a normal fridge and a car?
Ah….tough decision! After tons of investigation and deep thinking I decided to bite the bullet and get a sub-zero. And here is my verdict:
Sub-Zero fridge is better than a car:
1. Keeps your food cool and fresh no matter for much longer than a car
2. Maintenance cost is much lower than a car
3. It is more environmentally friendly
4. You don’t need to use your car as often to go grocery shopping
5. When you open the door, it is always cool (even during heatwave!)
What do you think? Did i make the right decision?
