  • Moving Tips For Seniors

Is it time to move mom or dad - to a smaller home or assisted living? Or maybe you are over 55 and wondering if it is time to downsize?  As the baby boom generation ages, we find ourselves not only taking care of our aging parents and making decisions about selling the family home and moving parents to assisted living or a smaller home – but also thinking about those decisions for ourselves!

The rate at which seniors are selling the family home and moving to a smaller residence is increasing – health issues are not the only reasons for a senior to move these days! More and more often, we are seeing seniors moving to be closer to grandchildren, find a smaller home, or opt to spend retirement in a different part of the country.  Have you started the conversation with your own parents?  The decision to move can be difficult and emotional for seniors who may have lived in the family home for many years. Routines are set and comfortable, and the expectation is often that they plan to stay until “they carry me out!”  Whether the move is for health reasons or just to be closer to family, starting the conversation before the move is a necessity, can pave the way for a smooth transition.  Making a move while the seniors are healthy and still active is an easier transition, both socially and physically!  Making new friends, starting new activities, and establishing routines while still healthy is faster, easier and less emotionally draining than making the same move when health has declined and social interaction may be more difficult.

How can you ease the transition and make the move comfortable for your parents or another senior you might be helping? Here are four steps to ease the process!

    1.  Be patient and be prepared! Have a family meeting well in advance to discuss the actual move. Be honest and realistic about the move, understanding and discussing the physical, financial and emotions components of the decision to move.  Let your parents be the ones to decide on a plan of action. Then be prepared to help them or provide help to deal with the physical details of the move.

    2.  Start early and start simple!  What to take, what to leave, what to give to the kids, what to sell or donate?  The first box is the hardest – so start with a room that holds less sentimental value. The kitchen is often a great place to start – with three stacks.  One to keep, one to donate, and one to trash. Pack up the donations, take out the trash, and when it is time to actually move there is much less to pack!  After the kitchen, moving on to bedrooms, office and family room will be easier – the process has begun.  Give them time to go through sentimental items, pictures and paperwork.

    3.   Take pictures!  Take pictures before hand to have a record of how things are! Take pictures of important items –  a digital record of memorabilia will make it easier to sell, donate or get rid of collections!

    4.   Hire professionals!  There are professional packers who work specifically with seniors to gently guide them and keep them moving through the sorting process.  You may find that your mom or dad prefers working with an outside party to sort through the house. If the going is slow or if you sense resistance to your help, try a company that specializes in helping seniors pack to move.  In addition, utilize these helpers for unpacking at the new place to ease the transition and make the move less disruptive and exhausting for everyone.

Working with the Hoffman Murphy Team was like having another person on my team through the whole roller coaster that is buying and selling a home.

Hoffman Murphy listens and advises, but never imposes their opinions. They give such spot-on strategic advice tailored for your specific needs that I never second-guessed advice they gave me. Once you pick your course of action, the Hoffman Murphy Team make magic happen. If you are selling, their attention to detail makes your place stand out and MOVE.

Hoffman Murphy has high standards, in fact, I found Sue Murphy planting by our garden by lamplight the night before our first open house after the gardener canceled at the last minute. But even after it is all over, the attentive details continue: from a laminated deed to a copy of the closing statement (that I cannot find the original of since we moved, go figure) in time for taxes.

I would never consider working with anyone else!

2013 is almost in the palm of our hands, which means it’s a great time to reflect on 2012. The Hoffman Murphy Team is eternally grateful for each and every one of you – and how you have each touched our lives in one way or another.

We’ve all experienced ups and downs throughout the year – some financial, some with job losses, and all of us grieved with the recent tragedies in Connecticut. However, even though we’ve had our bad times, there are always those good times in which we would like to reflect upon.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who entrusted us in 2012 to sell your home, purchase a new home, help you in making decisions regarding your mortgage, helping you through a short sale or foreclosure, and all of your real estate decisions. We thank those of you who took the opportunity to join us in Jazzercise, take part in the Redondo Beach 5k, took part in other events throughout our area, or simply just became a part of our lives throughout the past year. You have touched each of us in many ways, and made 2012 very special for all of us. For that, we can only simply say “Thank You” from the bottom of our hearts.

Our team promises to be an important part of your lives throughout 2013. Please contact us at 310-939-9393 if you would like to sell your home, purchase a new home throughout the South Bay, or if you simply have any question in regards to the real estate process in the South Bay. The Hoffman Murphy Team wants to be your top-notch real estate team in 2013 and for many years to come!

  • This Went So Smoothly! A Raving Fans Testimonial

Dear Marie, Sue, Tom, Carol and Melissa:

I can’t thank you all enough for the role each of you played in helping me sell my old house and buy my dream home! I never imagined it was possible to be this happy, and in a large part it’s because of all of you. You did a lot of “dirty work”, without actually getting dirty – and that’s a talent. You’ve proven that when problems come up, you take care of it so I didn’t have to worry or stress any more than I already was. That kind of peace-of-mind is priceless! So, thank you, all of you, for everything! You truly are the best team in town and I’m blessed to have had the pleasure of working with you.

Hope your holidays are as wonderful and blessed as you deserve them to be!

    Love and respect,

  • Taken Care Of From The Start – A Raving Fans Testimonial

Posted Under: Home Selling in Hermosa Beach, Rent vs Buy in Hermosa Beach, Moving in Hermosa Beach  |  November 7, 2012 6:57 PM  |  154 views  |  No comments

I want to thank you for making the recent sale of my townhome a wonderful experience! From the start I felt as if I was being taken care of – and I was! Each person on your team contributed to the remarkably smooth experience of selling my home. They were efficient – every person on the team had a particular job to do and worked inter-dependently, communicating with one another as well as myself. Each team member followed up with me, made sure I understood the process, what was expected of me, what I didn’t have to worry about, and how we could do the best job together for the best price.

You advised me and listened to my concerns. From the first meeting, we discussed the process and the team communicated their mission: asked me what I wanted, what were my expectations – and this happened all the way to the sale and closing (which remarkably only took 15 days!). I was clear about what the Hoffman Murphy Team was going to deliver, and was not disappointed. We spoke daily, had meetings to updated me on the market and what to expect in such an uncertain economy.

I was astonished when your busy team took the time to contact a Keller Williams agent 170 miles away so my fiancé and I could purchase a new home. Your team was efficient, sensitive, supportive, informative and very friendly. I felt as though I’ve made new friends!

I would not hesitate to recommend the Hoffman Murphy Team to friends or strangers. It is with certainty I can say I chose the right realtor and the right team for one of the most important events in my life.
