The former Johnnie’s Foodmaster on Beacon Street in Brookline will open next month as a Whole Foods Market.
Brookline officials granted the prepared food license, paving the way for the 31,000-square-foot store to open on April 15, according to the attorney representing the food chain.
In November, Johnnie’s closed its 10 stores and Whole Foods (Nasdaq: WFM) purchased six leases for $30 million. Since then, Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. has purchased the Johnnie’s lease at 105 Alewife Brook Parkway in Somerville and another in Medford for an undisclosed amount.
The purchases are fueling competition between Stop & Shop and Whole Foods Market. Wegmans will also compete for supermarket shoppers when it open at tghe nearby Landmark Center in the Fenway.
Mayor Thomas M. Menino broke the news about Wegmans in a speech Monday before the Municipal Research Bureau, an annual address to the city government watchdog.
