Blythe Landing Sailing Center plans to add several rustic buildings to its 24 acres off N.C. 73 on Lake Norman and a covered deck and patio to its existing 2,000-square-foot log cabin that’s used for sailing classes and storage.
The Cornelius Board of Commissioners voted 5-0 Monday night to approve a change to the center’s conditional use permit to allow for the additions.
Larry Vitez of the center said officials have no timetable for when the buildings will be added and have yet to raise money for their construction, although he’s confident the center can raise whatever money is needed.
The center is more focused on obtaining the necessary permits for its proposed dock, Vitez told the board.
Duke Energy and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission must approve the dock, which would be directly in front of a proposed 3,750-square-foot building that would house rowing shells and a sail loft.
That building is one of three that commissioners approved as part of the permit change.
A 780-square-foot building would serve as a shower house, and a 240-square-foot building would store small boats.
Vitez also updated commissioners on the center’s operations, saying “it’s been a great run” since the center opened last year as a public-private partnership with Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation.
No public money is used to finance the center and its programs, which have cost about $150,000 so far, Vitez said.
The center now has two full-time employees. It has 22 students in a scholastic sailing program that began last week and plans to partner with the Lake Norman YMCA on an adaptive sailing program for people with disabilities, he said.
The center put 225 to 250 people in boats through its various programs last year and hopes to raise that number to 500 this year, Vitez said.
Cornelius continues to partner with the center on programs, Assistant Town Manager Andrew Grant said in recommending the permit change. “We support this,” Grant told commissioners before their vote.
