The best way to load the truck is to put in the heaviest and things that occupy more space first. Also make sure that you arrange the things such that truck is balanced. Putting lighter things onto the heavier things can help create more space. Using a dolly is fine only for short distance. If you are using a dolly, make sure that you have someone following the dolly to make sure that nothing falls off.

If you discover that you do not have enough space on the dolly, do not overload it to save time. You may have to make more trips to n fro your new home but it is worth the time and effort if your things reach safe and in one piece. While packing up your furniture, leave the drawers inside the furniture pieces. You can use the drawers for storing things that a light and which can fit into the drawer easily. However, make sure that it does not add a lot to the overall weight of the furniture. If you have any fragile breakable items, try and load these towards the end of the loading process. This way they will be the first thing to be unloaded and the possibility of them rolling and breaking during transit is also lesser. You can use your pillows and blankets as padding material for breakable things. If you have extra sofa paddings and cushions, use them also as padding for other fragile items. These not only protect the item from damage but also prevent scratching and tearing during transit.

In addition to all these, use your judgement while loading and moving things around. If you cannot do it on your own, do not try because it can results in the items being broken or you getting hurt. Wait till you can get some help and then continue your loading.
