  • Save on Your Summer Electric Bill in Williamson County

The heat of summer is here and air conditioning units are running what seems to be around the clock here in the Austin area. In an effort to keep cool, the energy bills usually take a big hit on the budget during the summer months. If you are looking for a way to save money on your energy bills for years to come, consider planting trees in your yard. Trees that are placed properly in your yard can save you up to 30%, according to U.S Forest Service Center for Urban Forest Research.

Trees are the perfect thing to provide natural cooling shades in summer and to block those blistery cool winds of winter. Not only are trees great for helping to save on energy bills, they also do a lot to help the environment with pollution. Take for instance the city of Chicago. There are over 3.6 million trees in the city, and they help reduce over 890 tons of pollution each year. The Forest Service estimates that this saves everyone $6.4 million.

Nice large mature trees help sell homes too. A study in Portland, Oregon found that trees that grew in front of a home added on average $8,870 to the home's value and those homes spent less time on the market for sale.

If you choose to plant a tree, place a deciduous tree on the east and west sides of your home to help keep it cool in the summer, and to allow sunlight in during the winter. Both of these benefits will reduce energy use, in turn lowering your electric bills.

  • Austin Energy to Help Home Owners be Energy Efficient

Posted Under: Going Green in Austin  |  October 26, 2010 7:47 PM  |  540 views  |  No comments

Austin Energy is about to present its new incentive program that will benefit Austin area home owners wanting to add more green to their home. Austin Energy has said that the new program will be its best-ever offer, and will pay an estimated 42 percent of the cost needed to make the whole house more energy efficient. This increase is tremendously better than the 20 percent rebate usually seen.

Customers of Austin Energy have from now until December 20th to apply for the "Home Performance with Energy Star Rebate." This upgraded rebate will allow for 0 percent loans and up to $2,300 worth of Texas Gas Service rebates and federal tax credits. If you are considering upgrading the efficiency of your Austin home, now would be the time to do so with these types of incentives.

Energy-efficient upgrades that are eligible for the program include changes such as installing new air conditioning units, adding insulation to the attic and applying weather stripping. These are just a few of the upgrades that are included. To qualify for the program, applicants must be Austin Energy Star customers who own a single family home, condominium, town home or duplex. The loans for the program can range anywhere from $8,500 to $20,000 and range from 3 to 10 years in duration. This program is part of the U.S. Department of Energy's Better Buildings grant program along with the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
