If you are interested in more traffic to your website and I don't know who wouldn't be then staying on top ofevery single new update is important. This is a difficult task indeed because it seems like there are so many sources for information and new things to try.
I have mentioned a few times that Google has been tweaking both Webmaster Tools and Analytics lately. Moving stuff around doesn't seem to be that big of an announcement but within that announcement is another announcement that I think is interesting and more to what I was referring to in the opening paragraph.
(I was trying to see how many times I could use the word announcement within a single sentence!)
Anyways before you could adjust your crawl rate a bit. Once my site was properly indexed and Webmaster Tools was working well it let me adjust my rate which I set to the highest rate immediately. My thoughts were that I wanted the Google Bots there as much as possible. Well now this newer feature actually lets you adjust it further. In fact it seems scary that they let me control it like this. I am afraid to try it because its letting me do this “16567% change from current setting” Thats quite a dramatic increase.
According to Google “Googlebot determines the range of crawl rate values you'll have available in Webmaster Tools. This is based on our understanding of your server's capabilities. This range may vary from one site to another and across time based on several factors.” The reason the value might be going so incredibly high could be because my site is actually hosted on a rather fast server. I am almost sure thats the reason and it might be quite different for you and your site. Setting this number lower might be good in case you pay a lot for bandwidth or for whatever reasons you are limited in bandwidth usage. One thing that strikes me as odd is that “However, setting it to higher value than the default won't improve your coverage or ranking.” I guess that is true, having your site crawled more often really wont change its rankings but I would think it would improve how articles are indexed for instance if you have a blog hosted on your site and you write a new article, besides pinging servers, this might get Google to index the new article quicker. The sooner its indexed I would think the sooner it would be made available to be seen by search engines and again isn't that what we want?
Anyways I hope you find the new settings useful. I for one am going to go try out the newer, faster crawl rate and watch it bring my site to its knees! Here goes a 16567% increase!!
Oh and if you haven't done so check out my other post on setting a preferred domainfor hopefully a boost in your Page Rank!
