Songs about houses

Songs about housesI was going to make a super long “real estate mix” using songs about houses, homes, places, etc. When I went looking for material, I found far too many relevant songs! It doesn’t surprise me, considering the idea of a home or the meaning of a house makes for great songwriting material. The whole concept of “home” was too broad to include in this post narrowed the list below down to songs about houses.

Talking Heads – Once in a Lifetime
This is among my favorite Eno/Byrne (okay, and Weymouth and Harrison) songs. It’s also one of the most fun performances to watch on the “Stop Making Sense” DVD. Byrne smacks himself in the head, convulses, shakes...
“And you may find yourself living in a shotgun shack. And you may find yourself in another part of the world. And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile. And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife. And you may ask yourself: Well, how did I get here?”

Talking Heads – Burning Down the House
A fun, famous song by my favorite band.
“Hold tight, we’re in for nasty weather. There has got to be a way! Burning down the house…”

Madness – Our House
Typical. But I had to include it.
“Our house, in the middle of the street…” Blah, blah, blah, etc.

The Animals – House of the Rising Sun
This folksong has been covered by everyone from Bob Dylan to Nina Simone but I included this 1964 version because it’s the most well known. There are many different opinions about the “house” in this song; just check out this Wikipedia entry.
“There’s a house in New Orleans. They call it the Rising Sun…”

Malvina Reynolds – Little Boxes
This song is probably best known now as the theme for Showtime’s hit show “Weeds” about a drug dealing suburban mom.
“Little boxes on the hillside, little boxes made of ticky tacky…”

The Commodores - Brick House
Okay, Lionel’s not really signing about a house but this song is just so funky, I had to include it.
“She’s a brick house; mighty, mighty, just lettin’ it all hang out…”

Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young – Our House
A classic folk rock number from CSNY.
“Our house is a very, very fine house, with two cats in the yard, life used to be so hard…”

Led Zeppelin – Houses of the Holy
An instantly recognizable Zep tune with an absolutely unforgettable intro.
“From the houses of the holy, we can watch the white doves go...”

Radiohead – Life in a Glass House
This is one of my personal favorites off Amnesiac. I especially adore the wind instruments.
“Once again, I’m in trouble with my old friend. She is paper in the window pane, she is putting on a smile, living in a glass house…”

I'm sure I'm missing some good ones... Any music lovers out there want to help me complete my list?

Roxy Music - In Every Dream Home A Heartache

Especially considering the current market.

"Standards of living
They're rising daily
But home oh sweet home
It's only a saying"

Good ones, Ruth! Here are a few more that I like:
Pink Houses - John Mellancamp - His version of Born in the USA. Good stuff.
Country House - Blur - Awesome song about burning out on city life.
House of Cards - Radiohead - not a bad tune from their most recent album.
Little House - The Fray - these guys are due for a new album.
The Well and the Lighthouse - Arcade Fire - okay, maybe lighthouse is a stretch, but a very good song.
My Father's House - Bruce Springsteen - from Nebraska, one of the Boss's best but underappreciated albums.

Why is it that "She's a brick house" reminds me of a skinny white guy? (you know who I'm talking about)

There's a cute Keb Mo house about his misadventures buying a house in California. It's appropriately titled "House in California".

None of the following is literally about houses:

Various songs titled Come Into My House, by Allure, Queen Latifah and others.

Metallica has The House That Jack Built

Joe Satriani has House Full of Bullets
