  • Your Health & Decorative Waterfall Fountains

Posted Under: Home Buying in Houston, Home Selling in Houston, Design & Decor in Houston  |  January 12, 2012 10:51 AM  |  911 views  |  No comments

Many Thanks to Jaimie... great information.. I have several friends who have decor fountains in their homes and businesses...

If you have a decorative waterfall fountain... please check out how to maintain and clean your fountain...

    Can Waterfalls Make You Sick?

An outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in Wisconsin was linked to a water wall fountain decorating the main lobby of one local hospital. Here's what the hazardous discovery means for you.

    By Jaimie Dalessio, Senior Editor

Don’t go chasing waterfalls. At least not decorative, indoor water walls that may be spreading a potentially life-threatening form of pneumonia called Legionnaires’ disease.

That’s what happened at one Wisconsin hospital in 2010, according to a study published in the latest issue of Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology. When health officials noticed an area outbreak (eight people in southeast Wisconsin were infected), they launched an investigation to determine the source. Turns out, the culprit was a water-wall style decorative fountain in one hospital’s main lobby.

Legionnaires' disease gets its name from the legionella bacteria that causes it, and it can be contracted by breathing in mist or vapor from contaminated water. Older adults, smokers, and people with weakened immune systems are more susceptible, according to the Mayo Clinic.

None of the eight people who contracted Legionnaires’ disease (ranging in age from 50 to 86) had been hospital inpatients at the time they were exposed to the bacteria. In fact, only one person in the investigation reported lingering near the fountain. The rest included pharmacy patrons, a delivery man, and out-patients who passed by the decorative wall en route to treatment or another destination.

While the fountain had been routinely cleaned, the report points out that regular maintenance alone can’t reduce the risk of contamination. According to the report, health care facility guidelines developed after the outbreak advise against the installation of fountains “and other open decorative water features” within enclosed spaces in health environments because they may “represent a reservoir for opportunistic human pathogens.”

Symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease, including fever, chills, and cough, can start anywhere from two days to two weeks after exposure.
