This is the largest bike race in the US, and it would bring lots of notoriety to the area. Private fundraising is being raised to cover costs, though each of the cities is expected to have to pony up some dough as well.
It is hoped that several million dollars in local economic activity (retail sales, hotel bookings, etc.) would offset any contributions by local governments.
This is a Tour De France style event, with teams competing over multiple days. The local drug powerhouse Amgen is a big sponsor, and many of their employees are avid cyclists.
