Ulster County TownhouseAdmired for its natural beauty and noted for its historic roots, Ulster County has been alluring tourists and visitors from the New York City metropolitan areas for centuries.  The tranquil Catskill Mountains, the scenic Hudson River and the many farmlands of the valley, have attracted many people seeking rest and relaxation.  Not only occasional visitors but there are many second homeowners who travel the New York State Thruway each Friday afternoon to arrive at their “country place” and “detox” from the hustle and bustle of their weekday lives in the city.  But, in addition to the tourists and second homeowners, the Ulster County area appeals to many full time residents who make it their home on a day to day basis.  It’s hard to imagine while driving around the picturesque country sides that people are fortunate enough to live here everyday. • About Woodstock NY

    Woodstock, New York

The uniqueness that endears us to Woodstock today evolved through its diverse history.  Early settlers sought arable land in the mountains and farms and settlements were created prior to the American Revolution.  Thereafter, the Township of Woodstock was officially created in 1787.  Many industries such as the glass factory in Bristol (now Shady) built in 1809 existed.  The demand for leather goods brought about a need for tanning in the US.  Since hemlock bark provides the tannic acid necessary for the tanning industry, the Catskill Mountains with it’s vast hemlock supply was a natural place for the industry to be located.  As well, the Catskills was a large supplier of native Bluestone which was in demand with the growth of cities after the War of 1812.  A large immigration of Irish became established in the Town of Woodstock to work the California Quarry.  As the economy expanded, many people sought a place to escape the hot cities during the summer and the mountain house era blossomed.  The Overlook Mountain House was originally built in 1875 and patronized by many famous people until abandoned and eventually burned around 1925.  Yet, Woodstock’s tourist industry remained with several boarding houses and the hotel on the green which attracted some summer visitors.

It wasn’t until the year of 1902 when the Arts and Crafts movement came to Woodstock did the town begin its notable reputation as a Colony of Arts. Purchasing five farms on Mount Guardian, the founders of Byrdcliffe built necessary shops, residences and a library and in 1903 crafts people moved in as residents and the arts colony known as Byrdcliffe began.  In 1905 it was decided by Birge Harrison to establish the Arts Students League Summer School and Woodstock was thereafter known as a summer center for arts, crafts and music.  Over the years that followed, this reputation attracted further artists and musicians to the area.

It was, therefore, a seemingly natural fit to host a music festival in this music and arts colony in the mountains but it was not to be.  The infamous Woodstock music festival/concert which took place in 1969 actually was held in Bethel, New York some miles away.  But many people associated Woodstock with that concert and the spirit of the era and that reputation lingered on.  Peace signs and tie-died clothing can still be found in some of the quaint and eclectic shops today.   Woodstock posses the charm, diversity and love of the arts which continue on still today, combined with it’s setting among some of the most beautiful mountains, valleys and streams here in the Catskill Mountains in Ulster County, New York and one can fully understand how easily this unique township can pull you in.

Today, many of the residents are secondary homeowners seeking refuse from the hustle-bustle of the New York City metropolitan area.  They choose Woodstock for a variety of reasons as unique as they area.  Whether they find it a special place to be inspired while expressing their creative talents or a place to relax and spend the day just breathing in the clear Catskill Mountain air, they all have something in common, their love of this beautiful town just brimming with diversity,  in people, cultural and artistic endeavors.

Ulster County Real Estate - West Saugerties NY

West Saugerties, New York: An Area For Peace, Tranquility and Relaxation

    Ulster County Real Estate
I just emailed a potential buyer information on a custom built log home that an associate and I have listed. It's located on Blue Mountain Church Road in West Saugerties, New York (click to view the
Ulster County MLS listing). To me West Saugerties is one the most beautiful areas in Ulster County, just minutes away from Woodstock, the Village of Saugerties, the New York State Thruway, Hunter Mountain Skiing and a two hour drive from New York City.

You can see some of the most breathtaking views of Overlook, Catskill and the Berkshire Mountains. You can enjoy the many swimming and fishing holes along the Plattekill Creek and relax to the soothing sound of the waterfalls.  People love this area for the peace and tranquility. Over the years newer homes have been built off of West Saugerties Road on private roads such as Raycliffe Drive and Ori's View Way for the most amazing mountain views. If you are looking for a 1800s restored farmhouse with land for growing vegetables and gardening, drive on the many country roads such as Blue Mountain, Van Vlierdon, Van Buskirk, Platte Clove. Or, you like a home surrounded by woods and wild life, Band Camp Road off of Blue Mountain/West Saugerties Road would be the place for you....... Read More
