GENE LEEDY, FAIA - ARCHITECT :: By Martie Lieberman www.modernsarasota.com
I have had the pleasure of working with Gene Leedy, FAIA on a number of occasions, but most notably when creating "An American Legacy: The Sarasota School of Architecture Tour and Symposium" for the Fine Arts Society of Sarasota, in 2001.
Try as we might, our little committee had a hard time getting the attention of the original "Sarasota School of Architecture" architects - until Gene Leedy got involved. Through Gene's support, we were able to energize and engage Tim Seibert, Bert Brosmith, Victor Lundy, Mark Hampton, Carl Abbott, Jack West, John Howey, Robert Broward, Donald Singer, Alfred Browning Parker, William Morgan, Robert McCarter, Frank Folsom Smith, Boyd Blackner, Larry Scarpa, Guy Peterson, the "spirit" of Paul Rudolph, and many architects and scholars. They all came to Sarasota, Nov 2001, to participate in five days of tours, lectures, dinners, an exhibition and to screen a documentary film on the Sarasota School we made for this event.
The Sarasota School of Architecture Tour and Symposium was a sold-out success, and the funds (and enthusiasm) created by this event were invested back into our committee's next project, the creation of the Sarasota Architectural Foundation. SAF was formed to continue educating the public about the important architecture in our midst.
My friendship with Gene Leedy is an honor and a pleasure. He is one of the brightest, funniest, most creative and generous people I have ever met. FUN FACTS: The book, "SARASOTA MODERN" by Andrew Weaving (Rizolli) has a
photo of a house designed by Gene Leedy on the cover, and his own residence is also featured inside. They are
not in Sarasota - they are in Winter Haven, known to many of us as "Leedy Land."
