The event lasts from 6 to 8 p.m., May 2, at Austin City Hall, in Council Chambers.

Residents can help shape air pollution plan

Local elected officials need your input on which strategies the region should pursue to reduce ozone as part of its Ozone Advance Plan, including whether new measures should be adopted, whether existing measures should be modified or whether some measures should be ended.

Everyone is encouraged to lend a moment to complete a survey that will be used to help the elected officials select the best strategies for the region. The survey will end on June 30.

Car ownership and maintenance costs rising

Moving to Austin

About $10,000 is spent owning and operating the average sedan annually, according to a new AAA report.

The report shows that on average, the cost of driving 15,000 miles a year rose 1.17 cents to 60.8 cents per mile, or $9,122 per year. Overall, that's a about 2 percent increase on the cost of operating a car last year.

Owning and operating a car -- in addition to any debt service -- includes gas, tires, maintenance, insurance and depreciation.

Transportation is the second largest expense for American households, costing more than food, clothing, and health care, but few consider these costs when choosing a place to live, according to the Center for Neighborhood Technology.
