What Is Open In Santa Clara County on Columbus Day October 14?

by Michelle Carr Crowe, San Jose real estate agent

While Christopher Columbus Day may no longer be a politically correct holiday, many government and business offices will be celebrating by closing for the holiday on Monday, October 14, 2013.

All national, state and municipal government offices will be closed, including the U.S. postal service (mail service).

Of particular interest to home buyers and sellers, all Santa Clara County government offices, including the County Clerk's, Assessor's and Recorder's office, will be closed on October 14, 2013.

While many title and escrow companies are open for business on October 14, the County Recorder's office closure means no new escrows will be closed or recorded.

All Santa Clara County Libraries, including Saratoga, Cupertino and Campbell, will all be closed on October 14.

San Jose and other local City offices and City Halls will be closed.

Fortunately VTA busses and light rail will operate on a normal schedule for Columbus Day, October 14, 2013.

  • I Say No Pay for Congress Until Budget & Shutdown Resolved! No Results=No Pay, What Do You Say?

I Say No Pay for Congress Until Budget & Shutdown Resolved! No Results=No Pay, What Do You Say?

by Cupertino real estate agent Michelle Carr Crowe

As a real estate professional, I only get paid for results. With the disappointing U.S. Government Shutdown, I think Congress should only get paid like I do – when they complete results!

I say, "No Pay for Congress Until Budget & Shutdown Resolved! No Results=No Pay!” What do you say?

Key to Congress' Heart No Pay Till Shutdown ResolvedDue to the Senate and House of Representatives’ failure to do their jobs,  hundreds of thousands of employees who WERE doing their jobs are now on furlough. I strongly believe Congress should feel that same financial pain as their fellow federal employees. It's only fair, right? And it might even be motivational.

Until the budget and U.S. government shutdown is resolved, I agree with this petition, there should be no money paid to Congress members. If you agree, kindly sign the petition. They are about 11,000 signatures away from their petition's No pay for Congress during the shutdown 375,000-signature goal.

Read more about the petition here at No pay for Congress during the shutdown.

Since October 1st, hundreds of thousands of middle-class federal employees have been furloughed due to irresponsible members of Congress who refuse to govern for the well-being of the American people.

Congress should take responsibility for their own inaction and lose their paychecks until they come to a resolution. Every day this drags on, the more damage it does to everyday Americans and our nation’s fragile economy.

Thank you for learning about and considering signing the petition, and reading about I say, "No Pay for Congress Until Budget & Shutdown Resolved! No Results=No Pay!” What do you say?

  • How U.S. Government Shutdown May Affect Home Buyers, Sellers & Loans

How U.S. Government Shutdown May Affect Home Buyers, Sellers & Loans

By Michelle Carr-Crowe, Silicon Valley real estate agent

Speculation abounds about the affects of the October 1, 2013 U.S. government shutdown, but what home buyers and sellers need right now is for straight-talking real estate agents and loan officers to state the expected effects on Silicon Valley home sales, loans and life.

Guess what? The buying, borrowing and selling home process just became slower and more stressful.

US Government shutdown affects home buyers, loans imageAsk any real estate or title professional about the impact of one government holiday, such as Columbus Day on October 14, 2013. One less work day for closing escrows means buyers and sellers need to amend their contracts for either an earlier or later closing date. Only in this case, the later closing date is unknown-at least until the government starts back up.

As of October 1, 2013, about 800,000 federal workers are set to be furloughed and more than a million others asked to work without pay.

The biggest concern for buyers and sellers is the potential impact on loan processes-approval, funding and closing.

“Loans need to have tax transcripts verified directly from the IRS. Most loans also need to have social security numbers verified from Social Security Administration (SSA),” said Shashank Shekhar, CEO of Arcus Lending on the U.S. government shutdown.

“We have been informed by the IRS that in the event of a temporary government shut down due to the expiration of the government budget, both SSA and IRS services will be unavailable beginning October 1, 2013. These services will remain offline as long as the government shutdown is in place,” Shekhar said.

“Lenders won’t be able to verify either the tax transcripts or the social security numbers which could result in substantial delays in loan closings. How much the closings can be potentially delayed is dependent on how long there is an impasse on the budget,” said Shekhar.

Home buyers and sellers should verify with their respective real estate consultants, loan agents and partners as to the potential affect the U.S. government shutdown will have upon their transactions.
