Minnie Gant Elementary School in Los Altos is a special place.
Just ask Frank Soares and the over 400 fans of the Minnie Gant Elementary School Facebook page.
In August of this year, while waiting to meet Gant’s new prinicipal, Mr. Jeff Wood, I noticed the above picture tacked on the office bulletin board. Joey Soares’ sweet smile drew me in but it was Joey’s first grade teacher Gerianne Smith’s letter to the PTA that I found most intriquing. Joey is wearing his father’s sweatshirt from when he attended Minnie Gant back in 1976!
Who keeps a sweatshirt for over 25 years? I was to find out it is the biggest Gant booster, Joey’s dad, Frank Soares who attended Gant from 1976 to 1983. When it came time to send his son to school there was only one choice. For the Soares family it is Gant all the way.
I have said it before and I will say it again, there are some seriously long roots in our area of Long Beach and we are fortunate to have that stability in our lives.
Frank Soares told me about the Minnie Gant Elementary School Facebook page where people are reconnecting in droves and he has found 70 people thus far. The most interesting story concerns two of Frank’s Gant classmates who lost touch, reconnected through Facebook and are now dating! And to think, high school sweathearts are a rarity!
Minnie Gant truly is a special place and I would like to thank the Soares family for sharing their memories and Joey’s picture for this blog.
