Among Big U.S. Cities, Plano is Safest, Forbes Says

Downtown Plano TXForbes magazine has ranked Plano — which it describes as a "wealthy Dallas suburb" — as America's safest city.

Portland, Ore., was second.

Honolulu was third.

Here's a slideshow of the top 10.

The magazine looked at all U.S. cities of 250,000 or more — meaning Plano benefited from being compared with the likes of Detroit, Philadelphia, and Oakland. It examined rates of violent crime and fatal car crashes. (And not, apparently, rates of belicose, inebriated hockey players.)

Forbes found a pattern among the cities on its "safest" list: Many are affluent. Plano's median household income, $77,140 is 54 percent above the national average.

"But money alone isn't the key to safety," the magazine said. "The size of the wealth gap matters more." It quoted a risk-assessment specialist as saying, "If you have low incomes in an environment with high incomes, it creates a crime vector between the 'haves' and 'have-nots.' Places like Plano and Honolulu are more homogeneous."

Which hardly explains how New York finished sixth.
