    Margie Casey's Blog:

The secret is out - Travel & Leisure Magazine just named Blowing Rock North Carolina America’s Prettiest Winter Town. If you’ve visited here before, this comes as no surprise as Blowing Rock frequently makes the best of the best lists for its scenic beauty. Nicknamed the High Country, mountain elevations reach almost 6,000 feet near Grandfather Mountain and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Silly events like the Polar Plunge add character to this best small town in North Carolina. Baby Boomers who enjoy cooler summer months and don’t mind a bit of snow find the High Country the perfect place to find vacation and second homes. Here’s what’s new at our favorite High Country mountain communities:

BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAIN CLUB - Introduces living large on an efficient footprint, an affordable segue to owning a mountain home within walking distance of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The vaulted ceilings, stacked stone indoor/outdoor fireplace, open kitchen and hardwood floors are standard features in the new Cove Cabin at the Blue Ridge Mountain Club, cabin's priced in the low $300k’s. These well designed two or three bedroom cabins have the master suite on the first floor. Stainless steel appliances, granite counters and a spa tub add luxury to the Cove Cabins while poplar bark, cedar applique and covered porches add to the mountain cabin’s charm. The Cove Cabin represents the latest addition to the real estate opportunities available at Blue Ridge Mountain Club, which also includes cottages, homes and homesites.

According to public records, the Blue Ridge Mountain Club had 14 closed sales in 2011; 11 lots and 3 single family homes. Detailed sales reports are available to members. In 2012, Blue Ridge Mountain Club is reporting another 11 sales in the first 3 months. Blue Ridge Mountain Club recently added Westglow Resort & Spa to the list of member privileges included in property owner’s Play Now guide to the best area amenities. Westglow Resort & Spa is ranked as the Number 2 Destination Spa in the World by Travel & Leisure Magazine. Members of the Blue Ridge Mountain Club have access today to two golf courses, a ski resort and school, five outdoor adventures, two wellness centers and more until the community’s amenities are built. If you are searching for a mountain home in the High Country, ask me about Blue Ridge Mountain Club’s pampering Discovery Package.

CHETOLA RESORT - This historic resort is situated in an ideal location, especially for those who desire to be within walking distance of charming downtown Blowing Rock. Second home buyers can find affordable vacation homes and timeshares at Chelota Resort. One bedroom units are priced in the $200k’s up to four bedroom 4.5 bath units priced in the mid $800k’s. Maintenance free timeshare ownership can be purchased for as little as $500. The POA has designed a convenient way to swap usage to make it easier for property owners. Chetola’s lenient rental restrictions allow property owner’s to rent out their condominiums nightly, weekly and seasonally through the onsite property management company. This can be a smart way to reduce your net cost of owning a second home.

According to public records, there were 5 closed sales in 2011. We have received 6 scorecards this week from property owners elaborating on their satisfaction level at Chetola. Use our property search tool for a sneak preview of all condominiums available at Chetola. Click ‘request more info’ when you find what you want and the full listing will be sent to you immediately. Resort amenities include Bob Timberlake Inn, the award winning The Spa at Chetola and the Manor House Restaurant which is being restored after last year’s kitchen fire. The restaurant plans to re-open in May or June. Beautiful white swans and common lawns overlooking Chetola Lake add to the community’s neighborhood feel. The Blue Ridge Wine & Food Festival is Blowing Rock’s biggest spring event and is taking place April 11-15, 2012. If you plan to visit the High Country this spring, ask me to send you discounted vouchers for accommodations at the Chetola Lodge or I can quickly connect you with timeshare owners.

HEADWATERS AT BANNER ELK - Real estate developers who welcome honest feedback can uncover ways to improve their community and learn more about what’s important to property owners. At the risk of receiving harsh criticism for adjusting their HOA dues now that the HOA has assumed control of the homeowners association, Headwaters at Banner Elk recently outsourced an independent survey to determine how their property owner’s felt about their performance. We also sent out our property owner scorecards in the month of February. We were surprised at how many property owners were willing to share their thoughts with us as they did with the developer and this information is available to you.

According to public records, there were 9 closed sales in 2011; 7 lots and 2 single family homes. We talked with Headwaters at Banner Elk to find out what’s new. There are 4 homes currently under construction including a builder spec home. The Headwaters at Banner Elk team is busy finalizing their plans to open up the remaining 500 acres to buyers, larger land parcels ranging from 5-10 acres to accommodate those families who’d prefer a little bit more privacy. The High Country of North Carolina will be busy from April on as festivals, races and attractions re-open for the season. If you are searching for a home in this area, choose to stay at Headwaters at Banner Elk to see what this community can offer you. Let me know what dates you have in mind and I will quickly get back with you with availability.

HOUND EARS - Preparations are underway to welcome back residents as the golf course re-opens for the season on April 27, 2012. The tennis courts and swimming pool will be open in May. Once a ski resort in the 1960’s, this well established Bavarian themed golf community in Boone North Carolina has a member activity calendar filled with tournaments, live entertainment and resident parties. Buyer's looking to relocate will find Hound Ears perhaps the friendliest golf community in the High Country. Hound Ears location is special being smack dab in the middle of all the High Country action, about 15 minutes from Blowing Rock, Boone or the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Watuaga River runs through Hound Ears and is known for the best trout fishing east of the Mississippi.

According to public records, there were 12 closed sales in 2011; 1 lot, 2 condos and 9 single family homes. Detailed sales reports are available to members. The Swiss Chalet architecture is charming and unique in the High Country. The Hound Ears property owners association has been busy continually improving their mountain community. Eleven scorecards have been returned to date from property owners sharing their thoughts about Hound Ears. If you're searching for a friendly golf community in the High Country of North Carolina, be sure to ask me for more information about Hound Ears.

SWEETGRASS - When I think of SweetGrass, a vision of meadows filled with colorful wildflowers quickly pops into my mind. With the sweet smell of spring now in the air, it’s no surprise to discover the first community event of the season at SweetGrass is a guided nature walk by a naturalist exploring what’s blooming in the mountains. The nature walk is scheduled for Saturday April 21, 2012. You will need an invitation to participate in the walk which I’m happy to provide.

According to public records, there were 5 closed sales in 2011 at SweetGrass. One home just broke ground as two more mountain homes finish up construction. SweetGrass is one of the unusual communities where flatter mountain topography is conducive to easy walks throughout the neighborhood leading to open trails around SweetGrass Lake. This charming 22 acre lake is large enough to have spacious views of the open meadows and stellar views of Calloway Peak at Grandfather Mountain. If you are looking for a lake community with acreage or smaller footprint cottages, ask me to send you information about SweetGrass.

There's alot happening in the High Country of North Carolina as you can see. This is just a sample of the information we provide buyer's in this real estate market.
