    Margie Casey's Blog:

This week, I received an email from The Georgia Club located in Athens. Many readers ask me where is Athens Georgia? The city is about an hour and a half northeast of Atlanta. Athens is one of the best college towns in Georgia, home to the Georgia Bulldogs and the University of Georgia, Georgia’s largest college. The Georgia Club’s email was their March 2012 newsletter for the community. As I combed through the pages, I felt a sense of excitement about how much this golf community has progressed since it was bought out in September 2011 by Alvarez & Marsal Capital Group Real Estate LLC and how happy homeowners must be at The Georgia Club.

From Spiritual Life worship to golf tournaments, the calendar of events at The Georgia Club is filled with social clubs and opportunities for residents to draw closer together. Recently, The Georgia Girls took a field trip to Washington DC to have lunch with Senator Frank Ginn and enjoy a photo-op with Governor Nathan Deal. The curb appeal of the community reflects new urbanism combined with Lowcountry park-like squares. Homes with white picket fences line the streets throughout The Georgia Club neighborhoods, a bicycle friendly community. Whether people are searching for an affordable master planned community to retire or a safe gated community to raise a family, The Georgia Club combines both in a beautiful way.

In the heart of this golf community...

Two of Atlanta's Best Hospitals are also nearby, Emory University Hospital and Shepherd Center. Athens has undergone a historic preservation movement since 1980's, antebellum homes restored to the Victorian era, many open to the public to see. As the state income tax at retirement phases out in Georgia, college towns in Georgia like Athens continue to attract Baby Boomers interested in low cost of living areas and exciting college towns. Athens is home to the University of Georgia and the picturesque golf community The Georgia Club, now debt free. I visited The Georgia Club in the spring of 2011. I was impressed with the Americana architecture and quality of the completed community amenities. Back then, there was a rumor of the golf club turning private which at present, has not been announced.

This week Alvarez & Marsal Capital Real Estate LLC, KRE Capital and their capital partners acquired all the assets of The Georgia Club infusing capital for improvements and removing the club’s debt. Developed by CEO Jim Vanden Berg of Barber Creek Land Company, established gated golf community The Georgia Club has approximately 223 homes built to date of the 1,100 planned. CEO Jim Vanden Berg has a stellar reputation in Georgia and with his mission accomplished, has...
