Fish Hatchery Road - Lexington County, SC Real Estate

There's something to be said about driving and living along beautiful country roads, and Fish Hatchery Road in rural southern Lexington County, SC is a nice one. Residents along Fish Hatchery Road enjoy the serenity of country living while being close to the Columbia Metropolitan Airport, shopping, dining, downtown Columbia, award winning universities, colleges and schools, industry, and Interstates 77 and 26.

Fish Hatchery Road was named after (yep, you guessed it) a fish hatchery. Built in 1935, the Cohen Campbell Fish Hatchery (originally named the Styx Hatchery) raises largemouth bass, striped bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, channel catfish, and robust redhorse suckers in its 15 production ponds and reservoir pond. But enough about fish.

Fish Hatchery Road begins in Cayce at the intersection of Charleston Highway and the "birth" of Interstate 77. It continues through the town of Pine Ridge and the outskirts of South Congaree and Gaston. The road ends 16 pleasant miles later in Pelion, SC where it begins a new life as Old Columbia Road.

Established neighborhoods and farm houses reside next to innovative condominiums and newly-developed subdivision as more and more builders and home owners recognize the value of the picturesque and conveniently located acreage. Avid golfers frequent Fish Hatchery Road as they travel to and from the Golden Hills and Charwood Country Club golf courses - two popular and challenging courses of Lexington County, SC.

The roads mainly in these areas are 2 lanes which have caused a lot of wrecks mostly with deaths! The new Farmers Market out there is a great disappointment. The drive is too far to most shopping and other grocery stores with 1 dominating (Piggly Wiggly). Gas guzzlers can't make it out there and travel to where the best shopping went to: Harbison and North East areas and Lexington. As for schools, only Pelion is in a GREAT school district. The rest of the schools are in need of much assistance. Lexington School District #1 should consolidate them to have top educational opportunities for ALL Lexington #2-4 students. Otherwise; this is a very poor area and an over abundance of mobile homes empty or for rent with South Congaree being the worst of all. People before this Great Recession couldn't afford anything else. It is imperative that areas once good shopping places with malls should be revitalized when they left St. Andrews off Bush and Broad River Roads to deteriorate and have to shop in Harbison or Sandhills areas or the rich bedroom community of Lexington, the town. If it involves the lake (Murray), it sells. That is where the schools go and businesses. Then it became the location of Lake Carolina . Realtors send people to those areas while every where else just goes down the drain. Downtown around Elmwood Park and areas use to be run down until cultural activities brought the rich country folk from Harbison near the Lake tired of all the traffic for work. You need to tell it like it is and not all the glamour and glitz that is NOT where you are trying to push for development or how nice it is to be far out in this economy. It's NOT fun and expensive to live from amenities if one can afford these areas away from your thoughts of what makes a good area to live, work, and play!

I'm so sorry you feel this way, Dee. I live near Fish Hatchery Road, and the author is telling the truth here. This area is really pretty, and yes, like most country roads, it's a two-lane, so drive the speed limit, please! True, there are mobile home communities, as in all rural areas, but they are established and safe. As far as the schools are concerned, check the ratings, Dee. My niece and nephew both went to White Knoll schools, and they are excellent schools and Nationally Recognized!! Congaree Elementary in South Congaree is also an award-winning school, as are several of the others in the area. Again, please check the ratings. You will be very pleasantly surprised.
I've seen a few of the new developments as they grow. Ridge Pointe in particular has some very beautiful homes, with nice and friendly people living there. Dee, I recommend you take a nice Sunday drive along Fish Hatchery road and enjoy! You may want to take your golf clubs, because Charwood is a really great course. The folks who work and run this place are some of the friendliest people I've met.
If there remains some issues with Fish Hatchery Road, or any other road for that matter, I suggest you become active in contacting your government officials. Remember, if you are not part of the solution, you are for certain, part of the problem.
I hope you enjoy your country drive!
