Two million pounds of ice, kept frozen at a wintry 9 degrees, have been carved and sculpted into a winter wonderland at the Gaylord Texan in Grapevine, featuring all the colorful characters from the animated holiday television specialMerry Madagascar.

Giant carvings of the lion, hippo, giraffe, zebra and four penguins pulling Santa’s sleigh are among the special displays.

Forty artisans from Harbin, China, have been working the last month inside the giant freezer that holds the hand-carved sculptures and five 20-foot ice slides.

In addition, the hotel is ablaze with 1.5 million shimmering holiday lights, 2,300 decorated wreaths, 12,000 beautiful ornaments and a 54-foot-tall rotating Christmas tree.

There are 25-foot-tall nutcrackers standing guard in the atrium, several magical miniature train sets and a life-size gingerbread house, made totally of gingerbread of course. Visitors can decorate their own gingerbread families and train sets with icing, sprinkles and gum drops.

Outside, children can grab a tube and slide down the giant, eight-lane snow tubing hill with snow-filled tube chutes repacked with fresh snow each
morning.

The resort officially kicked off the Christmas season on Nov. 8 with an impressive Lone-Star Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony.

Tickets for the ice exhibit range from $11.95 for children at non-peak times to $26.95 for adults at peak periods. Snow tubing is $16.95 for all ages, and take-home gingerbread with all the trimmings you want to use for decorations ranges from $29.95 to $68.95 for up to four people.

    The ice exhibit is open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 10 a.m. to
10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The tubing hill is open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, and you can decorate gingerbread to your heart’s content from 1-8 p.m. Monday-Thursday and noon to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

  • Gaylord Hotels to join Marriott portfolio of brands

Posted Under: General Area in Grapevine, Quality of Life in Grapevine, In My Neighborhood in Grapevine  |  May 31, 2012 12:16 PM  |  545 views  |  No comments

Gaylord Entertainment Co. has agreed to sell its brand and hotel management company to Marriott International Inc. for $210 million, the companies announced May 31.

The all-cash transaction, which is expected to close in October, will add four hotels and about 7,800 rooms to Marriott’s portfolio.

If the deal is approved by Gaylord’s shareholders, Gaylord will continue to own the four existing hotels and Marriott will assume management of these properties under an agreement with an initial term of 35 years.

The four hotel properties include Gaylord Texan on Lake Grapevine; Gaylord Opryland in Nashville, Tenn.; Gaylord Palms in Kissimmee, Fla.; and Gaylord National on the Potomac in National Harbor, Md., near Washington, D.C.

Marriott International expects to earn an incentive fee in its first full year of management, based on improvement in Gaylord Hotels’ profitability, and further expects the transaction to be accretive to Marriott’s earnings per share by approximately 2 cents in 2013.

“We chose Marriott – a brand that is a recognized leader in the hospitality industry – due to their  focus on providing the highest quality experience for both group and leisure customers,” said Gaylord Entertainment Co. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Colin V. Reed in a news release. “According to a recent survey conducted on behalf of Gaylord in February of over 400 high-quality meeting planners, Gaylord ranked first in all under one-roof offerings and amenities and Marriott ranked as the No. 1 preferred group destination provider overall due to its service standards and wide distribution.”

Following completion of the transaction, Gaylord will restructure as a real estate investment trust, starting Jan. 1, 2013.

FürChange America, a direct-sell company, distributes a flagship line of natural wellness, beauty and lifestyle products called Fortunelle.

The company has offices in eight countries, with four more scheduled to open this year and seven more in 2012.

The goal is to have 30 offices open worldwide within 18 months, according to John Taylor, president and general manager of the global company.

Bai Feng, CEO of FürChange and FürChange International, told event guests, who gathered in Grapevine from around the country and the world, that he picked the United States as the world headquarters for FürChange because the direct selling industry is a mature and widely accepted business model in American culture.

“Some individuals have the ambition to become truly rich,” Bai Feng said. “For those, we will provide the fastest and surest route to their goal. But what most people hunger for is something simpler – financial peace. They yearn for a sense of ease and confidence in their daily lives. In FürChange America, we’ve created a place for everyone,” he said. “This is your company first. We’re here to listen to you, to meet your needs, and to nurture your success.”

Speakers at the event included medicinal plant authority Shaffer Fox, creator of the Fortunelle-branded product Caucasicum+ and author of 100 & Healthy – Living Longer with Phytomedicines from the Republic of Georgia.

Also presenting were the scientists and product specialists behind the formulation and development of Fortunelle-brand Amante for Him, Amante for Her, Oracai, Restada, iM3 and Restores+AD.

FürChange America offers entrepreneurs the opportunity to start a home-based business for less than $50. The company provides the training and tools necessary to help independent business owners succeed, including a personal retail website and sales training materials.
