Amazon confirms plans for three Texas locations
Two in North Texas
Staff reports

Seattle-based Amazon confirmed today plans to open three new fulfillment centers in Texas, including two in North Texas.

The centers will create more than 1,000 jobs, according to the company. The new centers will be located in the cities of Coppell, Haslet and Schertz.

“We look forward to putting more than 1,000 Texans to work at our new fulfillment centers in Schertz, Coppell and Haslet,” said Mike Roth, Amazon’s vice president of North American fulfillment in a news release.  “We appreciate the state and local elected officials who have helped us make this exciting investment in the state of Texas.”

According to court records obtained by the Fort Worth Business Press in December, Amazon signed a 15-year lease from Westport Park No. 7 Ltd., a Texas limited partnership by Hillwood Alliance Management LP, for the Haslet site.

“This is the biggest economic development partnership announcement in the history of our city,” said city of Haslet Mayor Bob Golden. “The jobs and potential tax base that this development will bring to our community is a major milestone in our city’s growth.”

The 1.2 million-square-foot site in Schertz, near San Antonio, and the 1 million-square-foot site in Coppell will handle larger items—anything from televisions to bbqs, for example. The 1.1 million-square-foot site in Haslet will handle smaller items like books, small electronics or DVDs.

“Amazon, coming to Coppell, complements our strategy of building a quality business base that supports the community and the region,” said Coppell Mayor Karen Hunt. “We are thrilled Amazon chose Coppell for a new fulfillment center. We recognize their large capital investment and new jobs brought to this area.”

“We’re pleased Amazon is investing in Texas by bringing three fulfillment centers and more than 1,000 jobs to our state,” said Texas Comptroller Susan Combs. “I thank Amazon for working with us—making it possible to bring new jobs and revenue to the state of Texas.”

USAA Real Estate Company is building the project in Schertz. Hillwood Development Company is building the project in the city of Haslet as part of AllianceTexas, and is also constructing the project in the city of Coppell.

Some of Amazon’s experiences in Texas have been less positive.  It received a $269-million tax bill from Texas Comptroller Combs in September 2011 before reaching an agreement to start collecting state sales taxes, a practice that the company had sought to avoid.

The dispute prompted the company’s decision to shutter an Irving distribution center, but the subsequent agreement saw it promise to create 2,500 jobs and $200 million in capital investments in the next four years.

The company, launched in 1995 and grown into a Fortune 500 powerhouse, enjoyed third-quarter 2012 sales growth of 27 percent, reaching $13.8 billion in net sales compared to $10.8 billion in third-quarter 2011.
