  • Great Fishing in NC mountains

Fishing on the western NC rivers and creeks

There are so many places in western NC and the surrounding GA and TN mountains around us to enjoy fishing. Favorites are largemouth and smallmouth bass, striper, crappie, catfish and trout. in our pristine lakes, rivers and creeks.

On March 31, 2012, seventeen-year-old Tyler Shields of Murphy, NC thought he was fishing for largemouth bass when he headed out with friends to Hiwassee Lake. What he boated instead was a 66-pound striped bass that shattered the state’s freshwater record - and topped by 2 pounds the North Carolina saltwater striper record as well.

Besides all the rivers and creeks around theBoating on the Lakese mountain roads, we have eight lakes within about 30-45 minutes or so to choose from for a great day of fishing. In North Carolina we have Apalachia 1,100 acres, Chatuge 7,200 acres, Fontana 11,000 acres, Hiwassee 6,000 acres and Nantahala 1,600 acres.  As we cross the state line into Georgia there is Nottely 4,200 acres and Blue Ridge 3,300 acres. In Tennessee there is the Ocoee 2,000 acres and plenty of river along the way which also held the 1996 Summer Olympics.

Fun and enjoyable for young and old alike is any day and time spent outdoors surrounded by the mountains and waters that we’re blessed with here in the western NC, north GA and east TN mountains.

  • Our Favorite restaurant in the Hiawassee, GA mountains

Michaelees Caffe in Hiawassee, GALooking for an amazing restaurant in the Hiawassee, GA mountains? Well do we have one for you... Michaelee’s Chocolate Caffe is located in beautiful downtown Hiawassee, GA in the Timberlake Village. It’s also right down the street from our Hiawassee Coldwell Banker High Country office - don’t you know we’d love to have lunch a few times a week if we were in that office more, but for now it's quite a treat for us.

Michaelee's Caffe is a full service boutique restaurant with very, and I mean very, generous portions, that also specializes in amazing desserts and espresso based coffee drinks. Gourmet fudge is also made right there with the finest and freshest ingredients. Just look at one of our favorite dishes... Lasagna Napoletano Italiano and a wonderful house salad with focaccia bread. Half of this Michaelees Caffe in Hiawassee, GAcame home for dinner too, as you can see those generous portions. Well, I might have been able to eat a little more, but had to save room for the delightful desserts. So hard to choose from them all, but today we decided on the Kahlua Toffee Chocolate Mousse Cake.

The dining experience for lunch or dinner is always warm and inviting. This family owned and operated restaurant is a real gem in the downtown Hiawassee, GA area. The Master Chef is Michael Collins, Sous Chef Lenny Collins and the interior was designed by Lisa Collins. Make sure you take some time to stop in and you’ll agree that Michaelee’s will be one of your favorite restaurants too.

    Winnepesaukah in Chattanooga TN

Summer Fun at Lake WinnepesaukahMore Summer fun in the mountains! Is there anything better in the summer than a day at the Amusement Park? Lets head over to  Lake Winnepesaukah  in Chattanooga, TN. Named for a Native American word meaning "bountiful waters" or "beautiful lake of the highlands," Lake Winnepesaukah is a great place for a day of fun for the whole family.

With over eighty-six years of history and excitement, Lake Winnepesaukah is dedicated to providing a family fun atmosphere that’s close to home and at a price the average family can afford. And that's exactly what we experienced when our family spent the day there too. Plenty of Summer Fun at Lake Winnepesaukahrides for the young to old. Paddle boats, games, playground, music, performances, free parking, lots of shade and a mini water park to cool off too. Good food or you can even bring in your own coolers and picnic in the many covered pavilions.

They also have a Carrousel from 1916 which was one of my favorites and one of the oldest and largest antique carousels in the United States. Created by the Philadelphia Toboggan Co. in 1916 and the 39th machine built by the firm. These majestic horses and ornate chariots were hand-carved and hand-painted by European artists, and the original scenic murals adorn the canopy. And for the thrill seekers (no, not me) there is the Fire Ball, the world famous hills of the Cannon Ball Roller Coaster or the OH-Zone! dropping at a speed of 50mph, experiencing 4.6Gs of intense excitement as you plummet back down to earth!

Well it must be because it just leaves you speechless seeing all the of natures beauty and the mountain scenes that surround us here! Doesn’t matter if you’re in Murphy NC, Blue Ridge GA or Copperhill TN and it doesn’t matter what the season is either. We are so fortunate here to enjoy four milder climate seasons - something we really missed out on when we lived in South Florida.
