Often when I am showing homes to my clients they ask me about the different types of siding that are installed on homes. Although I always encourage them to do additional research below is the very basic information that I provide to them. I am just going to speak about the 4 most common types of siding that I come across when viewing homes with my clients.
Positives: Although no longer used it was an economical option when first installed years ago.
Negative: Must keep it painted every 5-7 years, must address nail pops and keep seams/ends sealed so that moisture damage doesn’t occur. Manufacturers were involved in a law suit years ago.
Positive: Very economical, super easy maintenance, no painting needed and many styles and colors to choose from.
Negative: Can chip if hit with weed eater or pebbles, can shift or be blown off in a wind storm and can warp.
Cement Siding- (AKA HardiPlank/HardiBoard)
Positive: Extremely durable and available in different finished textures.
Negative: Needs to be painted every 10-15 years
Positive: Very easily maintained and continually looks like when it was first installed
Negative: Costly when initially installed can occasionally see cracks in the mortar.
