“Property is surely a right of mankind as real as liberty.” John Adams

"A right to property is founded in our natural wants, in the means with which we are endowed to satisfy these wants, and the right to what we acquire by those means without violating the similar rights of other sensible beings." Thomas Jefferson

“Just as man can't exist without his body, so no rights can exist without the right to translate one's rights into reality, to think, to work and keep the results, which means: the right of property.” Ayn Rand

The right to own real property or "real estate" is central to the vision of our founding fathers. Historically, ownership of property provided a means to "work and keep the results" of one's labor. Excepting the last 100 years or so, ownership of real property was the means to acquire real wealth. But has this changed?

Certainly, businesses have been built, and wealth has been acquired, as new technologies arose in the last century. But all businesses have a life-cycle. There will always be a new idea, a new technology, a better product. And then businesses fail, whole industries are wiped out, stock values plummet. Smart businesses must constantly change to stay viable, to remain valuable.

But what about real property? You may say, "well the value of my real estate plummeted in the recession." I am proposing to you that the value plummeted because you purchased it at the top of the market, with unrealistic expectations that the value would always rise. Didn't we all?
We all got burned. But what does that say about real estate? Nothing. It says something about people. Unlike a technology that has been replaced, land cannot be replaced. It cannot be manufactured. There is a limited supply and no one is ever going to make more of it. Unlike a worthless stock certificate to a failed business, land has real value. That is why it is called real property.

If ever anyone with means should be turning to (or returning to) investing in real property, the time appears to be now. On my next blog I will examine the factors that make a good real estate investment.
