Lennar Homes created floor plans for homes having multiple generations of family members living in the same house. It called this style "Next Gen". Sales in California, Arizona, and Texas have been successful and are expanding to North Carolina.
The home floorplan includes a 500 square foot suite which has all of the amenities of a second private residence. The suite can be ideal: for adult children returning home, an alternative to assisted living for elderly family members, or live in child care.
A move in the direction of multi-generation was started by Royal Oaks Building Group about five years ago for higher-end homes. Royal Oaks found that having two master suites, one upstairs and one downstairs did not sell as well as having the first floor suite be more flexible.http://www.newsobserver.com/2012/12/26/2566982/builders-target-families-with.html#storylink=misearch
New web start-up, Nextdoor.Inc, has allow residents from different Sillicon Valley neighborhoods connect with their neighbors, similar to a social network. I definitely think that this a great resource for people since it can make less intimidating to approach people, ask questions and exchange local advice.
One thing to keep in mind is that only logged-in neighbors can see/share info and everyone who signs up MUST verify thier address and sign in with their real names. Nextdoor Inc has said that it does not share content with search engines. This website has over 100 neighborhoods in the peninsula and is likely that it will continue to be trendy.
