Next year you will no longer be going to the Hamilton office to put your mail or access your PO box since the US postal service plans to relocate its Hamilton office and sell its office building in its effort to cut costs. The US postal service does not plan to do layoffs, only change locations. But it has not announced where the new office will be at, which may be a cause for concern for some Palo Alto residents who are used to having the post office at a central location in downtown. Â
As a resident of  downtown I think this can cause some inconvinience if the office is moved away from downtown since there is talk about moving the office to California ave. The main Palo Alto post office is located on Bayshore, the other side of highway 101, quite a stretch from downtown as well. Although the us postal service has been struggling to stay afloat, i think that that instead of completely moving an entire office away, they should consider looking into replacing it with self-service centers since there are still residents who walk to downtown to do their day-to-day errands.
Of course this is a hard compromise since this would mean job cuts to accomodate the self-service centers. In the long run we may just have to rely on Fedex or UPS.
