The Art Theater of Long Beach!

The Art Theater of Long Beach!

The Art Theater of Long Beach, CA. opened its door in 1924 as the Carter Theater. The Theater was constructed with great detail, it was a through back of class, and had a small resemblance to the Grauman’s Theater in Hollywood! The Art Theater originally opened up having an orchestra pit, seats six hundred and sixty three, and a pipe organ.

The building took a hit in the 1933 earthquake.  Schilling & Schilling remodeled in art deco streamline modern style after the 1933 Long Beach earthquake and renamed The Lee Theatre. Additions included the ticket booth, terrazzo floor and zigzag elements like the stepped piers, vertical fluting, and the central-stepped vertical tower that unfolds as a fern. Some say the tower resembles the bow of a ship cutting through the water.

In 1947 the Art Theater finally got its name, “The Art Theater of Long Beach”! In 2008 the Art Theater was remodeled again with a larger marquee and named The Art Theatre! The theater was updated using original blueprints with new interior, new sound and vision upgrades and restored exterior including a replica of the 1934 marquee and art deco trademark symmetrical storefronts.

Today the Art Theater is voted THE NUMBER ONE INDEPENDENT THEATRE in Los Angeles; the Carter Theater opened as a silent movie theatre and included a pipe organ and orchestra pit. It is the oldest operating single screen house in Long Beach. The Art Theater of Long Beach, a streamline modern-style historical landmark. Long Beach is very lucky to have a historic theater; it’s famous for its screening of the most imaginative and stimulating independent, documentary, animated, alternative lifestyle, and foreign language films. The addition of a wine bar and coffee bar to round out a full evening experience, we're lucky to have this long-running tradition. The Art Theater of Long Beach!
