Sunrise will reimburse 100 homebuyers up to $2,000 for improvements made to a newly purchased home, including landscaping, replacing a roof, painting the exterior of the house and installing energy-efficient appliances.
"It will not solve the challenges we, like all cities, face with foreclosures," Ryan said. "But it is a program meant to help put people back in homes and let more people call Sunrise home."
To claim a rebate, homebuyers should get prequalified for a conventional, fixed-rate mortgage or FHA mortgage; and buy the house between Jan. 1, 2012 and June 30, 2013, and make it their primary residence.
Applications for the program must be received by Jan. 1, 2013.
