  • Elysian Park - A Los Angeles Treasure

Posted Under: General Area in Echo Park, In My Neighborhood in Echo Park  |  May 6, 2013 7:49 AM  |  1,044 views  |  3 comments

Dodger Stadium being constructed Elysian ParkAs the city's oldest and second largest park, Elysian Park is a treasure that Los Angeles residents are determined to preserve. These 575 acres (then called Rock Quarry Hills) were dedicated as a city park in 1886 and subsequent city charters have protected the land for park purposes in perpetuity. Interestingly, the public did vote to allow construction of the Dodger Stadium in 1952 – so that the Brooklyn Dodgers would have a home when they came to California.

Also, while commercial development is not allowed, back in 1925 the Los Angeles Pistol Club (now renamed the Los Angeles Police Revolver and Athletic Club) was allowed to build a shooting range on approximately 20 acres of leased land in the Chavez Ravine area of Elysian Park.  When the 1932 Olympics were held in Los Angeles, the Pistol Club shooting range served as the venue for the Olympic revolver and pistol matches.

    Elysian Park Rock Garden

In 1935 the Parks Commission gave permission for construction of an athletic center, including a rock garden.

Elysian Park Rock GardenIn 1937, the club hired landscape artist Francois Scotti to design the garden, which includes four pools, stone seats, waterfalls, a barbecue pit, meandering rock pathways, and even a modest amphitheater. Soon thereafter, the Los Angeles Police Department moved in and took over maintenance of the site, which can now be rented for weddings, reunions, retirement parties, or other events. The Police Academy has also been the site of many movie and TV productions, including a couple of the Tarzan movies.  You might not think of a Police Academy as a place to visit, but if you enjoy nature, this one is worth your time. In 1973 the rock garden was declared a Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument, and visitors are welcome to tour the grounds and to stop in for breakfast or lunch at the adjacent Police Academy Diner.

    "Far from the madding crowd…"

Although in the middle of the city, Elysian Park is generally un-crowded. Exploring on foot gives a feeling of stepping back in time to Elysian Park - a respite from the surrounding citythe days when the wilderness ruled. Elysian Park remains an oasis of nature , where visitors venturing deep into the park can shed the stresses of city life as traffic and industrial noise give way to the music produced by mockingbirds, jays, red-tailed hawks, Audubon's warblers, red-shafted flickers, and the other feathered residents of this Audubon Society bird sanctuary.

    Portola Trail
draws serious hikers and walkers with its 5-mile round trip and 200 foot elevation gain. The trail takes visitors through shady glens, over grass carpets and past rare palms, imported rubber trees, and native oaks. Views from the park's promontories are, of course, spectacular.

More casual hikers can pick up the trail at various points, or explore shorter stretches of more than 10 miles of hiking trails and dirt fire roads leading through hilly and surprisingly wild terrain. Visit hike-la.com for a map and directions from downtown Los Angeles.

With all this at their doorsteps, it's no wonder that nature lovers choose to settle in nearby Elysian Heights and Echo Park.  Enjoy the park, and give me a call when you're searching for a home nearby.

1973 Redesdale Ave Silver Lake -The Jenkyns House

The Jenkyns House, at 1973 Redesdale Avenue in Silver Lake was conceived by Josef Van der Kar in 1960.  Currently on its third owners, the The Jenkyns House is a prime example of modernist architecture and carries many of the traits made famous by the architect.  Punctuated by walls of glass, open living spaces and a brick wall fireplace, it is easily recognizable as one of Van der Kar’s works.

1973 REDESDALE has a brick fireplace and walls of glass

Josef Van der Kar was a second-generation modernist known both for his political activism as well as his architecture. In the early 40’s, “Van” as he was known to friends, collaborated with fellow architect Gregory Ain (some of whose creations can also be found in Silver Lake) on a postwar housing project.  The ‘Community Homes” project was to exemplify utopian ideas but when the FHA imposed covenants to ban sales of the homes to minorities, Ain and Van der Kar refused to comply and project never came to fruition.

Van’s creations are flat roofed, post and beam homes with sliding glass walls that bring the outdoors inside. Interior doors swing or slide away, allowing the occupant to change room configurations for their own purposes- Similar to the Avenel Housing Project in Silver Lake, designed by Gregory Ain in 1947.  1973 Redesdale Avenue in Silver Lake is infused with many of these design elements.

1973 Redesdale - The Jenkyns House post and beam Silver Lake

The Jenkyns House at 1973 Redesdale Ave in Silver Lake if as lovely post and beam home, set up off the street with walls of glass providing great views of the Silver Lake Reservoir.  The front half of the house is built over the two-car carport and there is an enclosed garden patio off to side. The outdoor area includes a brick firplace for outdoor entertaining and relaxing.

1973 REDESDALE bedroom with wall of glass and beamed ceiling

The home has 3 bedrooms and 2 baths in 1,840 square feet of living space.  On the first level there are two bedrooms with a shared bath room. On this level you ’ll also find the main living areas of living, dining room and kichen. . Exposed beams and floor to ceiling glass are a signature of mid century modern homes of this period.

1973 REDESDALE in Silver Lake has open kitchen and floating staircases

The second story houses the master bedroom and bath and a loft space that works great for an office. The floating staircases add interest to the home’s style and give it a distinctive modernist flair. Currently listed with Deasy Penner & Partners for $1,070,000, the house is sure to draw attention.  Give me a call at 213-215-4758 if you’d like to check out The Jenkyns House at 1973 Redesdale Ave in Silver Lake.

4321 Cedarhurst Circle , Los Feliz

Exterior view of this Los Feliz Post and Beam home

How’s this for a 1962 Los Feliz Post and Beam?  The newly listed property south of Los Feliz Blvd has 4 bedrooms and 3 baths in 2,348 square feet of living space. The walls of windows and open spaces give it a feeling of being much larger. The vertical mahogany panels on the home’s exterior  match the railing of the  50 ‘ x 8′ cantilevered patio  that runs along the the entire home. The view from there is up into the hills Los Feliz, a bit different than what you’d find in a home above Los Feliz Blvd.

cantelevered deck of Los Feliz Post and Beam home

This Los Feliz home’s interior has been tastefully updated. In the kichen you’ll find  Caesarstone countertops and walnut cupboards. What cook would not love the Dacor gas stove and Fischer-Paykell two-drawer dishwasher.  Having only the counter dividing the kitchen from the dining area enhances the openess of the are and natrual ligth streams in from the outdoors.

Ktichen of this 1962 Los Feliz post and beam opens to dining room

The woodwork continues from room to room with  redwood tongue and groove paneling on the wall as well as along the dining area.  I certainly wouldn’t have any trouble relaxing in this room!  The sliding glass door brings the outside indoors and again provides alot of natural light. Chek out the ceiling and the canned light s in this room and how it opens into the dining area and kitchen on the home’s upper level.

iving room of 1963 post and beam has wood panelled wall

Just ask anyone who’s children are enrolled there what they think! I’ve had many clients choose the home they buy based specifically on being within the boundaries of this terrific school.

Ivanhoe Elementary hosts a regular monthly “Coffee with the Principal”, and provides Silver Lake parents with education on grade-specific math curriculums and other topics. After school enrichment classes at Ivanhoe Elementary include a writer’s workshop, guitar classes, and clubs for reading, Spanish, and math. Buying or Selling Los Angeles Real Estate

Buying a Los Angeles home is no simple process.  Los Angeles is a huge city!  If you are new to the area or planning a move to the area, working with an agent who specializes in the neighborhoods that interest you such as  Silver Lake, Los Feliz, Hollywood Hills, Echo Park, and Eagle Rock can be of critical importance.  If you have or plan to have children, you’ll want a Los angles real estate agent who can direct you to the best area schools.  Where will you be working?  An experienced local Los Angeles Realtor can help you narrow down the neighborhoods that will make the most sense for your commute to the office.  I am your local resident expert and can be your guide in finding the right Los Angeles properties for sale to choose from that will fit your budget and lifestyle!

It is also important for Los Angeles Home Sellers , to work with a local expert. When I list and sell a Los Angeles home for a client, I help them understand the local market and the minds of local agents and buyers alike. My priority is to sell your Los Angeles home for the most money possible in the least amount of time.  When you hire me to list your Los Angeles property, you hire me to market it fully to fellow agents, their buyers and the public both online and in person. Many agents will represent both the buyer AND the seller in a single transaction.  That is not how I operate. When I list and sell Los Angeles homes for my clients, I make the process as smooth and pleasant as possible. You will never have to question where my loyalties lie. Say Cheese in Silve Lake has a cute little store front and outdoor seating on HyperionFor over 36 years Say Cheese has been charming Silver Lake with its cheese, chocolate, champagne, and charcuterie. Those of us Silver Lake folks who trot over to Trader Joes on Hyperion need only stop in next door for even more variety. A full-service cheese shop, Say Cheese provides a gourmet array of cheeses, meats, and olives, does special event catering, and has a charming café that is open for lunch and breakfast for the Silver Lake crowd and visitors alike. Know a lactose intolerant cheese lover who stays away from cow’s milk? Love goat and sheep cheeses, both hard and soft? You’ll find it all at Say Cheese.   Owner, Glenn Harrell, lives in Silver Lake too- we were actually neighbors for five years!

picnic at the silver Lake Meadow near the Silver Lake reservoirSay Cheese also assembles picnic baskets and gift baskets. Join the Say Cheese Club

selection of cheese at Say Cheese in Silver LakeEven more enticing is the Salon du Fromage at Say Cheese–a special sort of cheese club that provides a cheese of the month with “a range of pairing options, recipes and suggestions.” There are 3, 6, and 12-month memberships ranging from 105.00 to 360.00.      Say Cheese is Silver Lake’s perfect place for a gourmet lunch, for gift shopping, for planning a party, for a vacation to France or Italy when you can’t afford the price of a plane ticket. I love a little table in front on Hyperion where I can enjoy a great sandwich and people watch as Silver Lake folks run their errands to Gelson’s, Trader Joes and the corner dry cleaner.

Say Cheese takes orders by phone (323-665-0545) or by email that can be held for pick-up or shipped. • Leela Thai- a great taste of Thailand in Silver Lake California

Posted Under: General Area in Silver Lake, In My Neighborhood in Silver Lake  |  June 21, 2011 9:09 PM  |  869 views  |  No comments

pad thai at Leela Thai in Silver LakeIf you live in Silver Lake or Los Feliz you are lucky to have so many great places to shop, dine and enjoy life.  Don’t drive west for dinner, drive east to Leela Thai. Located at 1737 Silver Lake Boulevard, the branch of the boulevard that begins south of the Silver Lake Reservoir and the Silver Lake Meadow and migrates to the east of it, Leela Thai provides delicious food for a good price in an arty atmosphere. There are literally over a hundred reviews of Silver Lake’s own Leela Thai on Yelp plus more on Urban Spoon. Very cool for the Silver Lake crowd to be getting noticed for good food as well as great music and indy films.  Even the  L.A. Times declares this Silver Lake Thai restaurant as “cheap and delicious”.

Leela Thai has had a love affair as big as an elephant with Silver Lake diners for some time.  It’s the elephant you’re looking for, in fact, as you drive Silver Lake Boulevard. A bright yellow sign emblazoned with a bedecked elephant above the terra cotta-colored building lets you know that you are in for another colorful Silver Lake experience. Unlike some Thai restaurants, draped and bejeweled, Leela Thai  has encouraged her patrons to create the atmosphere by leaving samples of their own doodles, art, poetry, love letters, and reviews under the glass top on each table.  You might say it actually has a Silver Lake vibe!

Leela Thai Sign on Silver Lake BlvdLeela Thai is vegetarian and vegan friendly, a great place for the gluten-intolerant (you can specify brown or white rice,) kid-friendly, and a stellar spot for people watching in the evenings because of the music venue, Spaceland, next door. If you’ve had enough of L.A.’s music scene and its denizens, eat lunch at Leela Thai. Order a 5.95 lunch special, and then take a stroll. Hidden amongst the auto body shops painted like canaries and Smurfs, you’ll find Silver Lake boutiques and galleries (more about that in future posts) replete with local treasures. With less than ten bucks under your belt, you’ll have money left to shop. Eat local. Shop local. In a neighborhood as great as Silver Lake, you’ll be thrilled that you did.

  • The Hollyhock House in Los Angeles - a beautiful creation of Architect Frank Lloyd Wright

Posted Under: General Area in Hollywood, Entertainment & Nightlife in Hollywood, In My Neighborhood in Hollywood  |  June 4, 2011 7:59 AM  |  1,418 views  |  No comments

Frank Lloyd Wright's Hollyhock House is a beautiful example of this famed architect's work. The Hollyhock house was built for oil heiress Aline Barnsdall between 1919 and 1921 and was Frank Lloyd Wright's first Los Angeles project.  The majority of his buildings are actually in Oak Park, Illinois where he designed 25 structures that were built between 1889 and 1913. Write is famous for his prairie style architecture of open spaces, and earth hugging buildings and furniture to match!

Frank Lloyd Wright Hollyhock House in Hollywood California

Frank Lloyd Wright had a prolific 70-year career during which he designed a plethora of amazing buildings. He has been called America's most innovative and creative architect and for good reason. 17 of his buildings have been designated by the American Institute of Architecture architectural as major contributions to American culture.

exterior details of the Hollyhock house depict the hollyhock flowerThe Aline Barnsdall's "Hollyhock House", was named for the use of the hollyhock flower design used both on the homes interior and exterior as well as the furniture inside. As other Frank Lloyd Wright creations, the Hollyhock house has evokes a Mayan feel and makes perfect use of the site on which it was built.

Guests are not allowed to take interior photos except on very rare occassions.  If you have the opportunity to see the Hollyhock house, notice how the theme of this flower is used throughout the interior and exterior archticture, window glass and particularly the furniture pieces.

The Hollyhock House was originally built as part of Frank Lloyd Wright's "Olive Hill", a thirty-six acre site theatre community, which never came to fruition.  Aline Banrsdall Olive Hilss was to include a performing arts center where she could produce her own avant-garde plays.  The Hollyhock house was to be her own residence, and the campus was also to include guest house "A" for the theater director, guest house "B",  artists studios, ahd retail shops. However, only Barnsdall's resdence, the Hollyhock House and the 2 guest houses were completed before the project was abandoned.

Wright was working Tokyo's Imperial Hotel during the construction of the Hollyhock House so much of the construction supervision was left in the hands of his capable son and landscape architect Lloyd Wright and his assistant, famed architect Rudolf Schindler.

barnsdall park wine tasting in the summer with Silver Lake WineAfter losing interest in completing the Olive Hill theater complex as originally conceived,  Aline Barnsdall donated the Hollyhock House and eleven surrounding acres to the City of Los Angeles for use as a public art park in 1927.  Today the house is part of Barnsdall Art Park in Los Feliz Adjacent East Hollywood with a local art gallery and theater and the grounds are leased for various events throughout the year.  Currently there are weekly Farmer's Markets held ath the park and during the summer month Silver Lake Wine hosts wine tasting events. Funds from such events combined with private donations have been used to rehabilitate the Hollyhock House and bring it back to its original glory for Angelinos and visitors to the area to enjoy.

Barnsdall Art Park is located at 4800 Hollywood Boulevard in the East Hollywood area of Los Angeles. Admission to the park is free but there is a nominal fee to view the interior of the Hollyhock House.  Public tours are offered Wednesdays through Sundays
12:30, 1:30, 2:30 & 3:30 PM without reservations and private tours can be scheduled as well. Check the Hollyhock Hock site for Park and Tour Specifics.
