Some have Charleston Style porches, some are Colonial, some are Traditional. All are really pretty. I went through all 5 of the homes for sale the other day with my buyer. This picture was taken by someone in the Ridgeland Park neighborhood in Decatur, GA. It's from my old house the year my husband and I got married. We celebrate our 6th wedding anniversary this month. It was a lot of fun to do. I found the wedding dress on ebay and the groom is wearing a tux I found at thrift store. I wish I could find a picture of the guy we had falling from our roof the following year. By the way, not a real guy, a scarecrow kind of guy. :) That was fun too. I hope you enjoy all the great things that October brings as much as I do.
Happy Halloween!

Did you know that the City of Decatur, GA has created 6 Informative Walking Tours? They range from easy 1 mile to what they call challenging 4 mile. I did the "challenging" 4 mile with my Dad who is in his mid 60's the other day. The temperature was in the upper 80's so it was kind of hot out. It is pretty level walking and we managed it just fine. But, just for fun we stopped for dinner in between at Tesoro the new Mexican restaurant next to Twains at the end of Church St. in Decatur.
We did Tour #3 which they call Sycamore and More. I actually learned something about Decatur, although I've lived here 12 years. The first 2 story house ever built in Decatur was in 1830. It's listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It's callled the High House, an appropriate name if you think about it being a 2 story house. It's on the corner of N. Candler and Sycamore Streets near the Library.
The tour starts at the Bandstand at the Square in Decatur. It takes you past the Presbyterian Church, which is not on the tour, but is interesting anyway. When you go by it, you'll notice 3 concrete posts sticking up out of the ground on the corner of Church and Sycamore Streets. Those were old hitching posts for horses back in the day. It takes you by the Decatur Rec Center on Sycamore. You'll pass the High House which I mentioned above. Then you'll go by the Methodist Chapel on the corner of Sycamore and Commerce Drive. It's built from Stone Mountain granite, and occupies the same property as the original log church, founded in 1826. You'll go down Historic Sycamore Street which was once a stagecoach route, characterized by it's fine houses, some of the largest in Decatur. You'll loop back up and go down Glendale Ave into the Glenwood Estates Neighborhood which was established in 1925. The homes feature large lots and natural landscaping. You'll loop back up and onto Ponce de Leon Ave passing Glenwood Elementary School. The last stop will bring you back to the Old Courthouse on the Square. The Old Courthouse still has the granite walls and great columns of the original structure built in 1898. Currently it is the Welcome Center and home of Dekalb Historical Society.
As I do the other walking tours, I'll post them with my comments. You can get the tours downloaded from Decatur's website DecaturGA.com or from the Decatur Rec Center, Downtown Development Authority Office or local shops like One Step at a Time in Oakhurst.
Check with your local area and see if walking tours are available. It's a fun way to see a city from a different perspective, even your own city. I found a neat website called MapMyWalk.com so you can actually make your own walking tours wherever you are.
