Holiday Traditions: 2013 Cat-Griz Game Day

It is no secret that owner/broker of Bozeman Montana Real Estate.net is a diehard Cat fan. In fact, her custom license plate reads NOGRIZ. So today, similar to the other 18,000+ Montana Football Fans, Jenifer will make her way to Bobcat Stadium to watch the rivalry that has divided the state for over a century.

For today is the 113th Cat-Griz Game Day.

The longstanding rivalry began November 26, 1897 here in Bozeman. University of Montana, the Griz, took home most the wins in those initial bouts. Montana State, the Cats, became more and more of a force to be reckoned with from 1957, the year Montana State joined the NCAA, on. More recently, the Cats have regularly disrupted and seized the glory from the Griz on Game Day as well as within the Big Sky Conference. The winner of the Cat-Griz Game gets to bring home: state-wide bragging rights, the Great Divide Trophy, as well as (perhaps most importantly) a win in the playoffs.

This year, official viewing parties extend from Puerto Rico to Alaska. It is estimated that a record breaking number of fans will pack the stadium. Montana-wide families will be settling in around noon to watch kickoff. This is our very own micro-super bowl and a holiday tradition like no other. The rivalry is the 31st oldest among active rivalries in NCAA Division I and of those is the 11th oldest west of the Mississippi River. (Source)
