Westlake High School Makes Newsweek's Top 100 List Again

Nola Wellman and Hannah Kight Westlake Graduation 2008It is hard not to be proud when our children's school once again made Newsweek Magazine's Top 100 High Schools in America list! Both Cerretha and I are have children who have graduated from Westlake and I have two more to go. Additionally, before going into real estate I taught in the Eanes School District for 12 years, most of those at teaching 10th grade Social Studies at Westlake High.

Here is the information from the Eanes ISD press release about Westlake's place on Newsweek's Top 100 list:

Westlake High School has been ranked 72nd among the top 100 high schools in
the United States by Newsweek magazine, according to the June 20 online
issue. Westlake HS, which has been included on the list of “best high
schools” each year since the original list was published in 2003, is one of
the top-ranked 5A comprehensive public high schools in the state.

The survey is based on six components: graduation rate (25%), college
matriculation rate (25%), AP tests taken per graduate (25%), average SAT/ACT
scores (10%), average AP scores (10%), and AP courses offered (5%).

Student/Teacher Ratio: 14.0
Graduation Rate: 98%
AP Tests per graduate: 5.3
College Bound % (actual, not transcripts): 87%
Average SAT: 1795
Newsweek Score: .858

Earlier this year, Westlake HS was awarded the highest rate in Central Texas
of direct-to-college enrollment at 87 percent by the Austin Chamber of
Commerce and the Ray Marshall Center. Westlake HS also received the 2010
College Readiness Award from the Texas ACT Council for increasing the number
of students taking the ACT Assessment over the past five years and
significantly increasing their level of achievement.

Of this year’s senior class, 99.9 percent applied to college, and for the
fourth consecutive year, members of the senior class have been accepted into
every Ivy League school.

An interesting note from Heather: Westlake High School no longer assigns class rank after the top 10% of each class. In Texas, the top 10% of a high school class have automatic admission into any state university or college, so our top tier schools like Texas A&M and the University of Texas are very difficult to get into these days. Because Westlake is so competitive and the students perform at such a high level, hard working Westlake students can have an A average and be in the bottom half of their class! By not assigning rank, students who have a great GPA can be evaluated by a college based on their classroom performance as opposed to class rank. This year, 2011, was the first year this system has been implemented and Westlake students had much higher admission success into the state's top tier universities. By the way, my daughter will be a senior at Texas A&M in the fall majoring in Atmospheric Science (Meteorology) and we could not be more proud! Gig'em.
