Yesterday, a member of the New Hampshire Housing Authority was in my office. I asked him if NHHA was working on providing loan programs that included a “Green’ component for renovating all of the foreclosures that are coming on the market. His response was: No, not yet. We have been considering offering something that would utilize a HERS* score for new construction, ‘but there aren’t enough Energy Raters in the state of New Hampshire.’ Imagine that. Well time to change this.

The second thing this member of NHHA said was, most REALTORS® don’t know how to value energy efficient homes.

Well, that’s where the Certified Green Professionals, such as EcoBrokers®, can play a significant role in lobbying for real estate education on how to value energy installations in a home.

If Obama’s stimulus package is passed, I expect that there will be a strong push for green collar jobs: Energy Raters, among them.

*The HERS Index is a scoring system established by the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET) in which a home built to the specifications of the HERS Reference Home (based on the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code) scores a HERS Index of 100, while a net zero energy home scores a HERS Index of 0. The lower a home’s HERS Index, the more energy efficient it is in comparison to the HERS Reference Home.) from energystar.gov

If you go to www.energystar.gov, you will find all kinds of pertinent information about saving energy and the environment. You can findout the latest energy rebates and tax credits for buying Energy Star Certified products, and you can find out who produces and sells those products.

For those looking to find a Builder of Green Homes in New Hampshire, I have provided the list of Builders who have partnered with Energy Star. Although I have only met three of them, I have found them all to be like-minded in their goals of providing a well built home that is good for the environment, saves energy, and reduces our carbon footprint.
