  • 4th of July Fireworks in South Lake Tahoe

Posted Under: Entertainment & Nightlife in South Lake Tahoe, In My Neighborhood in South Lake Tahoe  |  July 2, 2011 11:33 AM  |  564 views  |  No comments

All along Lake Tahoe on the 4th of July some of the best firework displays on the west coast will shoot into the night sky. Along with the lights, the community is encouraged to come to picnic on the beach to meet new faces and hang with old friends alike.

Holiday weekend visitors can expect the fireworks show to explode into unusual and whimsical shapes such as jellyfish, stars, butterflies, and smiley faces around 9:45 p.m. This annual family tradition is choreographed to music and broadcast on local radio stations KRLT-FM 93.9 and KOWL-AM 1490. “Lights on the Lake” is sponsored by the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority. The fireworks are launched from offshore barges and can be seen from all corners of town. South Shore offers convenient access to viewing areas via public transportation, paved bike trails,  and nearby park and walk venues.

The fireworks are visible from all over town. Below are some of the sweet spots to get a front row seat.

    • The Tahoe Queen and M.S. Dixie II: South Shore’s two Mississippi paddle wheelers offer a unique opportunity to view the light show from the water. Board the Tahoe Queen for a Dinner Dance Cruise or the M.S. Dixie II for a Fireworks Cruise. Both feature live entertainment and fantastic views of the evening’s display. Log onto www.laketahoecruises.com.
    • Nevada Beach: Located about two miles east of the Nevada casinos on Elk Point Road, Nevada Beach is the ideal setting for a family barbecue at the beach. A wide, sandy shoreline leads down to the sapphire waters of Lake Tahoe. Charcoal barbecues and picnic tables dot the beach. The view across the lake to the West Shore and Desolation Wilderness is unsurpassed. And the view of the fireworks display is one of the best in town.
    • Regan, Timber Cove Marina and El DoradoBeaches offer front row seating that fills up fast.
    • Bijou Community Park: Set back from the shoreline and boasts a skate park, disc golf course, dog park, golf course, and playground to keep the whole family entertained while holding your ideal viewing spot.
    • The Tallac Historic Site: Off Emerald Bay Road, has an east-view perspective with nearby Baldwin Beach and its picnic tables. For the more adventurous, the top of Mount Tallac offers a bird’s eye view of the fireworks extravaganza, but don’t forget your headlamp for the trek back down.
    • Edgewood-Tahoe: A Fourth of July favorite is Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course’s 4th of July Celebration. This setting offers front-and-center viewing of Lights on the Lake from Edgewood’s private beach and an all-you-can-eat buffet. Watch the fireworks show front and center from the beach to the south of Edgewood Tahoe’s clubhouse. Edgewood will be offering only a limited amount of tickets to the event and it’s already Sold Out.

Posted Under: Quality of Life in South Lake Tahoe, Entertainment & Nightlife in South Lake Tahoe, In My Neighborhood in South Lake Tahoe  |  June 16, 2011 7:50 PM  |  592 views  |  No comments

Get ready for the Lake Tahoe Paddle Festival, the world’s most beautiful standup paddleboard race through amazing Emerald Bay, one of the nation’s most photographed natural features.

This year the Paddle Festival will be hosted by Meeks Bay Resort!!

The Lake Tahoe Paddle Festival is a solstice celebration of human powered watercraft featuring “Ancient Art to State of the Art™” boats, boards and paddles. Their focus is the preservation of indigenous watercraft art and culture. Meeks Bay Resort will be hosting the world’s most beautiful paddle race through amazing C’alitaash (Emerald Bay) on Saturday June 18th at 8am. Interpretive exhibits will highlight sustainable recreation, healthy foods, yoga, healing arts and environmental awareness.

Join the Festival for a weekend of workshops, clinics, fun, food and family entertainment. Try out the world’s fastest growing sport—standup paddling—on a demo, or paddle your canoe or kayak over to learn more about protecting Lake Tahoe’s clarity and efforts to prevent the proliferation of invasive species. Bring the grandparents and kids to learn about building ancient tule reed boats, dugout canoes or “old school” wood boards. There will be something for everyone in the family.

If you’ve never been out on the water, or you’re a SUP professional, the Lake Tahoe Paddle Festival is where you’ll want to be to celebrate the summer of 2011.

  • America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride

Posted Under: Quality of Life in South Lake Tahoe, Entertainment & Nightlife in South Lake Tahoe, In My Neighborhood in South Lake Tahoe  |  June 3, 2011 10:01 AM  |  578 views  |  No comments

The 20th Annual “America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride-Lake Tahoe” has built a reputation for not only its spectacular scenery, but also its great food and support. This ride promotes Lake Tahoe Bikeway, the plan to build and interconnect bike lanes/trails around Lake Tahoe, and is the culmination of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s National Team In Training spring fund raising program.

America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride will Start and Finish at the Lake Tahoe Horizon Casino Resort on Highway 50, Stateline, South Shore Lake Tahoe, Nevada this Sunday, June 5th with start times from 6am to 7:30am.

The 72-mile America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride circumnavigates the highways clockwise around Lake Tahoe in both Nevada and California. It includes a challenging 800 foot climb to a rest stop overlooking Emerald Bay and a 1,000 foot climb to Spooner Junction. There are also many short rolling ascents and descents totaling over 2,600 vertical feet of elevation gain! The altitude ranges between 6,300 feet and 7,100 feet above sea level and the ride is recommended for conditioned recreational bicyclist, not for beginners.

For the more conditioned bicyclist and Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of America’s “Team In Training” participants, a full 100-mile Century is offered adding an out and back on Highway 89/ Bike Trail to visit historic Truckee, California, before continuing around Lake Tahoe.

You should not ride unregistered as the roadways are narrow, and by doing so you jeopardizes the safety and future of the ride and may open you up to personal liability as only registered riders are covered under the ride insurance policy. Unregistered bicyclists will not be allowed on the closed road course.

Online registration is open on this website.

For the recreational bicyclist who would like to mix sight-seeing and bicycling, the Boat Cruise & 35-mile Lake Tahoe Half Ride Fun Tour is offered.

The ride starts at 6:45am with a short 1-mile ride to Ski Run Marina where you and your bike board the Tahoe Queen for a scenic boat cruise to North Lake Tahoe. From there, you will join the ride course for the remaining 35-mile ride back to the Horizon Casino Resort. It comes with continental breakfast onboard & t-shirt, lunch on the course, rest stops and more. This Fun Boat Cruise is also open to friends and family members who would like to accompany participants across the Lake and return to Ski Run Marina. A fun-filled experience limited to 120 bicyclists & 50 guests.

Traffic will be delayed on North bound Highway 89 from 6:30-8:30 a.m. at Spring Creek Tract. Southbound Highway 89 will remain open. The remaining roadways will be open and motorists are asked to share the roadway and plan a little more time to get to their destinations.
