Considering that Le Video was just dubbed the best place to rent videos in San Francisco in the San Francisco Bay Guardian's Best of the Bay 2008,I suppose it's not really hidden. However with Netflix dominating the
movie rental scene I figure that most people don't give video rental
stores a second thought and simply walk on by. Well, if you're a movie
buff who loves foreign cinema and classics, or even a movie lightweight who is just looking to rent something different, I promise that you don't want to walk by Le Video.
According to their site, they have "over 90,000 films, including rare and
foreign videos found nowhere else." They also have a great staff that will help you navigate your way through all those shelves of film to that elusive title you're looking for and give you honest opinions and informed recommendations. Check out their most recent reviews and you'll see how dedicated these guys are to the craft.
One thing I really love about the place, which I hope others don't see as morbid, is their In Memorium section both on their site and in their store. I'm a sucker for classics like All About Eve, An Affair to Remember, Against All Flags, His Girl Friday, The Scarlett Empress, and anything else with Cary Grant, Deborah Kerr, Marlene Dietrich, Bette Davis or Maureen O'Hara - and that's just the beginning. Though it's sad to find that one of the great actors or directors of one of these films has passed on, it's wonderful to be reminded of all they helped to create. And when Le Video pays their respects, it's not only a lovely gesture, it's a testament to how much their staff cares about the films they lend you.
