Creating a British Themed Bedroom

With a little creativity and ingenuity, you can easily create your own British themed interior design in any room of the house. Since there really are no rules to decorating in a British styled theme, the sky’s the limit when designing your bedroom, bathroom or kitchen. Use these tips and techniques for creating a British themed bedroom and you’ll be sure to have the perfectly designed space in your home.

As with just about any design theme—whether it’s a bedroom design or kitchen design or wherever—the walls are the first place to start. What’s great about creating any travel themed room is that it’s not too hard to find authentic wall art, décor and accessories from the actual location. Wall art and murals like vinyl stick on decals can easily help to transform your blank walls into the skyline of London. Put up a big graphic of the London tower, the UK flag or Big Ben and you’ve got a cheap way to create a British feel in any room.

One commonly used theme for British décor is the union jack. The union jack is the nickname of the flag that is most often associated with the UK. This royal flag is plastered all over décor and home accessories, making it the perfect choice for any British design theme. From the union jack coffee mugs for your kitchen design to the union jack bedspread in your bedroom design, the union jack flag is as British as it gets.

Other great décor themes are as British as apple pie is American. The double decker bus is a commonly British designed bus that screams UK. Another common British themed décor or home accessories design is the British telephone booth. These big bright red booths are unmistakably British.

British Colonial/Classic

While not always thought of as British, this design theme incorporates the United Kingdom’s domination over Africa and India. Typically thought of as a jungle type theme, British colonialism design themes work well in bedroom and living room designs best. Steamer trunks, handsome brown leather furniture’s and rich woods lend to this design theme perfectly. With the addition of a few elephant tusks, a lion’s head or a gazelle’s horn, you can easily recreate life back in the British colonies. Wicker furniture and brass décor is more of an eastern British colonial design that mimics Indian British colonialism.

British classic is more along the lines of ritzy upper-class estate living. Leather furniture, dusty ancient tomes and the floor globe all create a sense of what it was like to be a duchess or duke in the days of British monarchy. Rich woods and dark colors dominate this great design theme that’s perfect for bedroom and den designs.
