    Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is presenting Palos Verdes hikes and a variety of outdoor activities for Palos Verdes homes owners to participate in during the month of September.  In addition to hikes and other outside activities, they are always looking for volunteers to assist in keeping our hillsides maintained.

    Special Events:

    A guided nature walk by Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy to Abalone Cove Reserve, will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2014, at 3:00 p.m.  Walk along the bluff of Abalone Cove learning about this active restoration site while enjoying the view from Portuguese Point.  This is a moderate walk and is free and open to the public.  For more information contact (310) 541-7613 ext. 201.

    National Public Lands Day hosted by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy, will be held Saturday, September 27, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Volunteers will play an instrumental role in beautifying White Point Nature Preserve.  Join in for a full morning of planting native shrubs to enhance the demonstration garden.  Refreshments and t-shirts provided.  RSVP at www.pvplc.org.

    Team Leader Training Workshop at White Point Nature Education Center, Saturday, September 6, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Team Leaders provide support and oversight during October Volunteer Days.  If you love restoring habitat and working with others, this program is for you.  Applicants must go to at least 2 volunteer events before attending the workshop and commit to 4 or more Saturday events before the end of 2014.  Please contact Adrienne Mohan at amohan@pvplc.org or call (310) 541-7613.

    Monthly Activities:

    Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy First Saturday Bird Walk at George F Canyon, will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2014, at 8:30 a.m.  This is considered a slow easy walk so that the birds are not startled.  Binoculars are provided if needed.  Also, later in the day at 3:00 p.m., the First Saturday Walk takes place at the Canyon with a descriptive walk by a naturalist.  There is a $5 suggested donation for this walk.  George F Canyon is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.

    Storytime with the Rangers at the White Point Nature Education Center will be on Saturday, September 13, 2014,  from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon.   You can listen to nature themed children’s stories for young people of all ages told by the LA City Rangers.  This month’s theme is The Watershed.  Storytime is the 2nd Saturday of every month.   The Center is located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar, San Pedro.

    Explore nocturnal sights with an expert Naturalist under a full moon with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at the George F Canyon Nature Preserve on Saturday, September 6th, 2014.   Call (310) 547-0862 for reservations and time.  Children must be 9 years of age and there is a charge of $10 per person.

    Birding with Wild Birds Unlimited will take place at the White Point Nature Preserve on Wednesday, September 17, 2014,  at 8:30 a.m.  Binoculars will be provided.  This is an easy walk and is free.  Parking is at the Preserve located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar, San Pedro.

    Ranger Guided Family Walk at the White Point Nature Preserve will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2014,  from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.  This is a free family hike guided by LA City Rangers through the beautiful 102 acre White Point Nature Preserve located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar, San Pedro.

    Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy Native Plant Sale will be held at White Point Nature Education Center on Saturday, September 27, 2014,  from 12 noon to 2:00 p.m. at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar, San Pedro.

    Birding with Wildbirds Unlimited will be held at the George F Canyon Nature Preserve, on Wednesday, September 24, 2014, at 8:30 a.m.  Binoculars are provided with this slow and easy walk.  Parking is at the George F Canyon Nature Preserve, 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.

    Volunteer Opportunities:

    Outdoor Volunteer Day will be held at the White Point Nature Preserve, on Saturday, September 20th and September 27, 2014, from 9:00 a.m to 12:00 noon.  Join in for native plant garden beautification and family friendly activities during these Saturday volunteer opportunities.  Please call  (310) 541-7613 to RSVP.

  • Palos Verdes Concours D'Elegance Road Rallye

    On Saturday, September 13, 2014, the Palos Verdes Concours D’Elegance Pleasure Road Rallye will be featuring some of the “nooks and crannies” of the Peninsula that most of us have never explored.

    Gather your friends and navigators and join in – beginning with lunch and registration at the Rolling Hills Country Club from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.  At 1:00 p.m. the actual “Pleasure Road Rallye” will begin and will take advantage of the beautiful ocean views which surrounds the Peninsula.  During the 2 hour drive there will be a few brain teasers, and some interesting stops.  After viewing some historical Peninsula locations, you will finish at the Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes Estates where a reception will be held honoring this year’s Grand Marshal Don Panoz (who leads the Delta Wing endurance racing team).

    This is a pleasure rallye so beginners and experienced rallye participants are encouraged to join in.  There will be hot rods, classic cars and even the family car is welcome to join – driving and exploring for fun.  The entry cost will include lunch and the Grand Marshal’s reception (which starts at 5:00 p.m and goes until 10:00 p.m.) with a hosted beer, wine and champagne reception.  The entry cost of $200 includes both the driver and navigator.  Children under 12 ride for free.  Any additional guests may travel with you enjoying both the lunch and reception for a price of $95.  Tickets will sell out and you are encouraged to purchase your tickets soon.

    Automotive Innovation will be the theme for the 22nd Palos Verdes Concours D’Elegance.  The event will take place on Sunday, September 14, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Trump National Golf Club on the Palos Verdes bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, where you can walk among the pristine Concours quality autos that defined Innovation in their age.  The featured classics include Cord and Tucker, and others such as Duesenberg, Microcars, Morgans & Volkswagons.  The Concours will also recognize the 50 Anniversary of both the Porsche 911 and Ford Mustang. Other Classes will showcase post-war American and European cars and a full range of sport cars and motorcycles.

    This year, the Concours will celebrate the last 100 years of innovation and produce a show with automotive gems that demonstrate the pursuit of engineering advancement and style that have brought us the auto of today.   This years, Grand Marshall will be Don Panoz whose automotive and motorsports accomplishments (such as leading the Delta Wing endurance racing team and working to bring it’s technology to street cars) demonstrate his pioneering spirit and focus on innovation.  In addition to viewing all of the exhibited cars, there will be shopping area for gifts, dining at the elegant Club House, and many show cars to examine in the display areas.

  • Palos Verdes Land Conservancy Presents The Beauty of Nature Film Series

    Palos Verdes home owners have the opportunity to view The Beauty of Nature film series sponsored by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy.  The films that are being shown are:

    Rivers and Tides will be showing on August 23, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. at the Palos Verdes Art Center.  This is a documentary from Thomas Riedeisheimer shadowing renowned sculptor, Andy Goldsworthy, as he creates works of art with ice, driftwood, leaves, stone, dirt and snow in open fields, beaches, rivers, creeks and forests. With each one of his creations, he carefully studies the energetic flow and transitory nature of his subject.  This film received the Golden Gate Award Grand Prize for Best Documentary.  You are also able to order box dinners to enjoy at this event by contacting (310) 541-2479.

    The Palos Verdes Art Center is located at 5504 Crestridge Road, Rancho Palos Verdes.

    More Than Honey will be presented on September 11, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. at the Palos Verdes Peninsula Library.  This 95-minute show is hailed as a definitive work on  the disappearance of the honeybee populations worldwide and the importance of individuals working to reverse this trend.  It was directed by Markus Imhoof.  Don Barnes will be sharing stories about his 40 years as a beekeeper.

    The Palos Verdes Peninsula Library is located at 701 Silver Spur, Rolling Hills Estates.

    Kon-Tiki will be shown on November 22, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. at the Warner Grand Theatre.  This film follows five loyal friends and explorer, Thor Heyerdel, as they sail a fragile balsa wood raft along an ancient path 4,300 miles across the Pacific.  Along the way they are attacked by tidal waves, sharks and other dangers.  There will be a question and answer period following the film to review the fact or fiction of the explorers.  This requires a ticket price of $10 for adults 18 and older.  Tickets can be purchased at www.pvplc.org.

  • Palos Verdes 57th Annual Portuguese Bend Horse Show

    Palos Verdes homes owners have an opportunity to support the annual Portuguese Bend National Horse Show held at Ernie Howlett Park, beginning on Friday, September 5, through Sunday, September 7, 2014.   This is the 57th year that this A-rated event offers three full days of a wide variety of special equestrian events.  Activities will be scheduled in both riding rings including the prestigious Pacific Coast Horse Association Horsemanship Medal Finals for riders 14 and under and the PCHA Victor Hugo Vidal Adult Horsemanship Class for riders 35 and over.  In addition, the $10,000 Barby Hartwig Hereford Jr-A/O Jumper Classic and the $15,000 Seahorse Jumper Classic promises to challenge some of the West Coast’s finest Jumper riders over a difficult and exciting course.

    This show is the most popular three day event of its kind in the West.  Palos Verdes residents will enjoy the feel of an old fashioned hometown fair with food booths, hay bale, boutique, puppet shows, pony rides, games, moon bounce and face painting.  The Children’s Area is open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  This event is sponsored by The Peninsula Committee Children’s Hospital to benefit the Associates Rehabilitation Center Caregiver Wing and the Associated Endowed Chair in Sarcoma at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

    Riding events will begin at 8:00 a.m. each day.  On Friday admission is free all day, but on Saturday and Sunday, general admission will be $5 and children under 12 are free.  Parking is free and is located directly across from the event, with free shuttle services.   • Palos Verdes Point Vicente Museum Tour

    Palos Verdes Point Vicente Lighthouse & Museum Tour, offered by the Los Serenos de Point Vicente docents, will take place on Saturday, June 21, 2014.  Palos Verdes homes owners will have the opportunity to enjoy a tour of the Point Vicente Lighthouse, which is not often open to the public, and view the Point Vicente Lighthouse Museum.   You will enjoy the beauty of the lighthouse which stands 67 feet tall and is one of the area’s jewels.  The lighthouse beam shines 185 feet high and can be seen twenty miles out over the ocean.  Point Vicente was named in 1790 by Captain George Vancouver in honor of his good friend, Friar Vicente of the Mission Buenaventura.  In 1979, the Point Vicente Lighthouse was added to the National Registry of historic sights.  After your tour, you can visit the native plant garden located adjacent to the museum.

    This fun outing also includes an easy hike along the spectacular bluff top at the Vicente Bluff Reserve.  You will enjoy the beautiful view of our Palos Verdes coastline on your quiet, peaceful walk.  The group will  meet at 10:00 a.m. at the parking lot next to the Point Vicente Interpretive Center located at 31501 Palos Verdes Drive West in Rancho Palos Verdes 90275.

  • Palos Verdes Beaches Make Honor List Again

    Palos Verdes homes owners have some of the cleanest beaches in California to enjoy.  Heal the Bay is again reporting that Palos Verdes beaches and coves are in the current top Honor Roll 2013-2014 list for California.  This means that our local waters have received grades of A & A+ throughout the year.  Heal the Bay assigns weekly grades to more than 440 sites along the West Coast for summer dry-weather water quality and to another 60 locations that are on year round monitoring.  Heal the Bay is a nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to making Southern California coastal waters and watersheds safe, healthy and clean.  They use science, education, community action and advocacy to pursue their mission.
