The Great Backyard Bird Count

The Great Backyard Bird Count is an organization that enlists ordinary citizens to track long-term population trends of birds across the U.S. and Canada.  From February 15 to 18, curious bird watchers may join the watch in counting birds in their backyards, city parks, wildlife refuges, or urban trails.  Sound interesting?  All you need is a pair of binoculars and 15 minutes of your time.  Visit www.birdcount.org to view the online bird guide and download a regional bird checklist.  After you’ve counted the flocks of sparrows, blue jays or shorebirds, you can upload your findings to the website.  Last year participants from 22 states and six Canadian provinces participated, counting more that 17.4 million birds and identifying 623 species.
