Carbon Monoxide Detectors Required by January 1, 2013!
The City of Seattle asked for an opinion about the dealine for installing carbon monoxide (CO) alrams and we thank the City for asking.Â We may not appreciate the response, but it gives clear direction to rental property owners and managers.
The state legislation states that rentalÂ properties are required to install CO alarms by January 1, 2013.Â The regulations adopted by theÂ SBCC seemed to extend that date.Â On June 22, theÂ SBCC considered the request from Seattle for clarification, and stated thatÂ the deadline imposed by the state legislationÂ is firm and final.Â ALL RENTAL UNITS must have CO alarms installed by January 1, 2013.Â It does not matter whether or not there is a source of carbon monoxide in the unit.Â The state law does not allow anyÂ exceptions to the January 1, 2013 deadline unless those exceptions are created by the SBCC.Â The only exceptions created by the SBCC are for hotels and college dormitories that doe not have fuel fired appliances.Â All apartment units and all rental properties must install CO alarms by January 1, 2013.
