Goodfellas: The Times files an interesting report...

The Times files an interesting report on the rise and fall of the city's tight-knit Italian enclaves, particularly in Brooklyn, where old age and relocation have enabled other ethnic groups to creep in on historically Italian turf. But there are a few strongholds left: "Neighborhoods like Ridgewood and Middle Village in Queens; Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst and Bath Beach in Brooklyn; the South Shore of Staten Island; and Throgs Neck in the Bronx. They are New York’s last remaining bastions of first-generation Italian immigrants." [NYT]

bay ridge was never a tight knit Italian enclave. In the 60's the Greeks became dominant. More recently it is the middle easterner and to a lesser extent Asian. Most people I grew up with in the 60"s have fled to SI, LI NJ or Florida, but there is still a lot of positive there, one of the better NYC nabes to raise kids. Plenty of sports, pool, outdoor track, bike path. nice skatepark etc Too bad the bowling alley left. So much for the politicians help against gentrification.
