Recyling - It's the minimum anyone can do

Last night I attended a special event at a well known hotel.  As I was paying for valet parking at the front desk when I witnessed something quite frustrating. A guest at the hotel asked the desk clerk if he could "recycle" the beer bottle and the clerk took the bottle - that means yes in most people's minds.  The guest left and the desk clerk thre the bottle in the trash.  What an atrocity! I asked the clerk about their "recycling program" and he said they don't recycle. I asked why he didn't tell the guest they don't recycle but he shrugged his shoulders.  I cringed because had it been me I would have asked to have my bottle back, taken it home, and then recycled it.  I was amazed at his indifference.

I realize not everyone is passionate about recycling and believe you me, it's not always easy. At home I dislike washing containers before recycling.  However, I became an advocate for recycling when my husband challenged me to give it a try, again and again.  So, I bought 2 bins, one for plastic bags (HEB) and one for everything else (city of SA).  I was amazed how our trash reduced by as much as 75% and the remainder could be recycled.  I felt ashamed at how I personally, willingly, and through selfishness didn't want to wash extra containers was creating 75% more trash than necessary.  If I, one person, could reduce landfills at the same rate then I would become an advocate - Let's make the world a better place!

I challenge you to do the same. In fact, if you take it to work too, and make a contest out of it, I think you will find your bosses will say thank you and your colleagues will have a little fun with it.  I also challenge you to speak with your management about recycling,  There are so many ways you can save money in your company by doing so and you would become a hero.

Come back next week and share your stories!
