Perhaps you’ve just bought a property and it has been inhabited by mice because the people have moved out. You must do what you can to prevent them in the future, and get rid of the ones you have now.

That’s not always easy to do. If the house is in a country setting, the mice and rats will come in to get warm and they are abundant in population. They will even be a problem in the city if there is trash around and things for them to eat.

The first order of business will be to get the trash, standing water, and any food or crumbs out of the house. Sweeping, vacuuming, and general cleaning is important. Wash the floors with pine cleaner or a bit of bleach mixed with water. Once the house is cleared out, the best option is to have an exterminator come to fumigate or otherwise rid the house of pests. This will remove any other pests that may be there, too.

Once the removal has been done, set traps where the mice tend to travel through the house. The rodents that have been killed can easily be replaced by a new generation of them, so do what you can now to prevent more.

Put the traps along walls and under the sink in the kitchen. Put one behind the refrigerator. Place traps under the bathroom sinks and in any basement water sources, too. When mice move throughout a house they use routes that they seldom vary from. If you know those routes, it’s even easier to know where to set the traps. Check with your local health department for instructions on removing rodent droppings and dead rodents as they carry disease.

You can use the sticky type traps or mechanical traps. The sticky traps have an adhesive inside that the mouse gets stuck to and can’t escape. Without water or food, they die. With these type traps you just pick it up and throw it away in a plastic bag without touching the rodent.

The mechanical type is the ones that are set with some sort of bait on the trigger. Peanut butter works well because it sticks and can’t be easily stolen from the trap. Mice are crafty enough to steal a piece of cheese or other food from the trap. Use gloves and a plastic bag with this type so you don’t touch the rodent.
