What is Fly Dumping?

Illegal Fly Dumping

Illegal dumping, or fly dumping, is the dumping of any waste material on public or private property without a permit from the Chicago Department of Public Health (CPDH).

Trash that is commonly dumped includes:

  • tires
  • old furniture
  • household garbage
  • construction debris
  • appliances
  • yard waste
  • hazardous waste (generally dumped in drums or barrels)

But it can be anything!

So, this means that fly dumping includes disposing of your trash in someone else's garbage can or dumpster. Offenders are subject to fines (a minimum of $1,500 for the first offense), jail time of up to 6 months, and community service of up to 200 hours. In addition, their vehicles may be impounded at the owner's expense.

Thank you for posting this article. It is important for everyone to understand the penalties of such wrongful actions. This happens more often than one would think, and sometimes the perpetrators are never discovered. Thank you again for posting this.
