Do it. Move your money. Walk into the big bank, withdraw your money (ask for cash whenever possible — it really worries them because it messes with their cash reserves, which are very, very small relative to deposits at any given time), and take it across the street to your local small community bank or your local credit union, and open an account there. (If you plan on withdrawing several thousand dollars, you may have to give the bank advance notice if you want cash. Another option is of course the bank check or cashier’s check — but remember, if the bank attempts to charge you a fee for it, then just demand cash instead, and watch how fast they will waive that fee for you…) You will likely be delighted with the warm welcome and reception that you receive from your small, local financial institution. They really would love to meet you and get to know you. Imagine being treated like a human being, instead of just another number! Best of all, these local banks and credit unions very often offer interest rates which are even higher than what the big banks are paying, and they almost always offer you nice perks like truly free checking, truly free atm and debit card use, a free safety deposit box, free check printing, and all sorts of other old fashioned benefits that the big banks used to offer us, but no longer do. Check out their mortgage rates and programs, their cd rates, rates on auto loans, etc., while you’re in there — remember, these smaller institutions know what it means to EARN your business the old fashioned way — they work hard for it. They very often will greet you by name, and really remember who you are. Best of all, you will be losing nothing, and probably gaining a whole lot more than you imagined. Remember, their accounts are FDIC insured, too. Yes, they are “real” banks, just like the big ones. The only difference is that they really, really appreciate your business. Imagine that! Another very important benefit is that if you bank with your local small bank or credit union, they are far more likely to make you a home loan, car loan, etc. — so why not start up that business relationship right now? Could you imagine how the big banks will react if, one by one, customers all over the country began withdrawing their deposits and placing them in the smaller community banks and credit unions?! While protesting is a wonderful use of your constitutional rights, all you get for it is honked at and beat up, pepper sprayed, and then arrested by the police. Why not fight back by hitting the big banks where they’ve been hitting us: in their wallet or purse. Move your money, people. It’s YOUR money. Have you noticed that some of the big banks have already reconsidered and waived their atm card fee policies? Well, don’t wait for that to happen, and don’t be stupid enough to think it will last, either. Go take your money out of a big bank today — you’ll be glad you did!
